Sooooooo,...

I've been looking for a project and came across a really nice walleye tournament style boat for cheap,...

I haven't bought it yet,....Not sure if I will,..

The problem is the hull,....Or more specifically the damage to the bottom of it,.....

It has an area on the bottom of the port side about 2 foot by b foot where it looks like the previous owner might have hit something on plane,....The outer layer of gel coat is just plane gone,...

The rest appears sort of solid and fixable and the no holes all the way through the hull,....

I'm sort of familiar with the glasser rebuild stuff,...

BUT,....I have never done any real glass work before,....

Barring any serious structural damage to the stringers or transom how big of a job dose that big of a repair seem to be??

Being as there are no breaches of the hull could it be repaired without popping the cap??

Sorry I have no pictures because I haven't decided to do it yet,...

The good news is the trailer is probably worth the asking price alone,...

The even worse news is the outboard and controls have already been stripped,....And it is a wheel boat,...

So between the wheel and the glass I feel dirty like I need a shower,...........

Just thinking someone might have a good idea or two,...

How big of a job? About 1.5 years to rebuild... once you scratch the surface, you will open a big bag of dung. He has sold the good stuff any one who wants the trailer will have to deal with the boat. you will be into the boat for 5-10k when completed, so just go buy a running boat with that scratch.

just my opinion others will vary.

Re: I feel all itchy and stuff,................

I can't see it taking anywhere near a year and a half,......

Judging by the immaculate condition of the cockpit area,....No stains or wear on the carpet that I can see,...I'm thinking it was at least stored inside all of it's life,......

Other than the spot where the gel coat has been scuffed off it appears in good shape,...

I understand the things one can and will find in a boat project,...

5k all in and I would be very happy,...

10k would be too much for this project,...

Then again 10k doesn't buy much at all in the walleye boat world,....

And I am well aware of the cost too re power either new or used,....

Just trying to get a handle on the difficulty rating of the fiberglass repair,...

After having seen and followed some projects here on I boats I don't see this one as being all that bad,....

Again it is a two foot by 8 foot flat area on the bottom of the boat that looks like it was scrapped off by a log or something while on plane,........Nothing smashed through or anything,...

If it was a real Walleye boat, it would be made out of aluminum!

Blasphemy!!!!!,............

If it were the best of the walleye boats it would be one of these!!!,.....

No aluminum walleye boat will do what those do!!!,....

However the one I'm looking at isn't a Ranger,........

I still think I might do it,.....Coin flip at this point,...

fiberglass is easy, but it is a skill that must be mastered. I said a year and a half due to other commitments (read wife), weather to hot too cold, rain, and all the other factors that come into play.

Lunds are okay but I think they are a bit overrated,.......

I was in a Ranger 620 in the FLW Walleye league championship in 2006, We were caught 20 miles off shore in a big blow,...10 to 12's all the way in,......I would not have wanted to have been in a Lund at that moment in time,...

Lunds will rot just like any other boat if not taken care of, and they'll sink too if the foam gets saturated... but not as fast as a f'glass.

Ummm... 12 posts in and no one has discussed the big white elephant in the room....

You mentioned "controls" being stripped... You going to put a tiller on this rig or are you going steer from the console?

All kidding aside, I'm a bit concerned that he sold the motor and controls, because he was thinking his hull was a gonner... Or, even worse, you could be buying his "donor" boat that he bought for the power...

If its the hull you really want, then see if you can get some pictures... If all you have to do is repair this area, then you would be lucky...

I would not take it home until you have drilled some core samples... If he objects to this, then I would walk... (it's just a few drill holes in a boat that has a gaping wound in the bottom of it already)....

Just my .02..

Re: I feel all itchy and stuff,................

Honestly I was first looking at it for just the trailer to use with my little 16 footer,.....I don't like the trailer it's on,...

However I think it could be a good hull with some work,.....And then I start thinking,..........Witch is usually a precursor to chaos,.....lol

And yes IF I do it it will have one of them steering wheel dohickeys,........................

Really need pics to give you the right advise. If the 2'X8' section is just scratched up on the bottom, its no biggie. If its showing glass fibers with holes in it, there might be a little more to it. Inspect it very closely as well to make sure there isn't more damage that you haven't seen. post pics, post pics, post pics. :)

Ohh and fiberglass boats rule!

Re: I feel all itchy and stuff,................

I wouldn't try to fool myself into thinking it needed anything less than a full resto... foam, transom, and stringers along with the exterior glass repair. Then if it doesn't need all that, you're a little better off than you figured.

Yeah, That's what I'm afraid of,....

But if I do it I would have a real nice boat when done,........

And I have to remember the whole reason I ever looked at it was for the trailer anyway,.....

It would be Saturday before I get a chance to get it, Maybe someone else will beat me too it,.....lol....
