I got a Yamaha electric starter on eBay (new) but it doesn't show how to connect the electrical cables

I have a 2025 Yamaha 9.9 (all manual) but wanted to get electric starter so I found this on eBay and it's semi-good except I can make it start but no make the starter "stop" after the engine is on. The other thing I'm wondering about is if it's supposed to energize the battery when it's "on". This is a trolling motor for me. The "In my Yamaha" picture shows what's been put on, partly connected, and it would start but not turn the starter off when it's on (still runs).

I hope someone can help me know how to connect the electrical properly.

Thanks,
Biederboat

Gee, The start switch should momentarily provide power to the starter solenoid. When you release the start switch, the solenoid will stop power to the starter.

Sounds like a wiring problem.

Normally the battery is connected to the one of the starter solenoid secondary windings posts. The other secondary winding post is connected to the starter.

The primary winding is connected to the start switch which is a momentary push button.

Based on the picture, I will guess the starter solenoid is a bit different than standard and connects the battery power to the start switch, thru the starter solenoid, eliminating a wire from the battery to the start switch. When you push the start button, the power is sent to the starter solenoid, which engages the secondary winding, energizing the starter.

What is the complete model identity of the motor?

If a four stroke it will start with a T or an F with some other letters that follow the 9.9.

No solenoid used on that starter motor. A starter motor relay provides battery power to the starter motor.

Thanks for getting back to me. I was away yesterday but yes, it is what I bought from eBay. And luckily I did send them a message also about not having cable connection properly and he did send me a picture of it on an eBay message which I have attached. I will hopefully let you know that I got it set up good but might not be until tomorrow sometime.

Have you looked at the kit that Yamaha has available for what I am guessing to be your motor?

I am not seeing a neutral safety switch in your illustration.

I just sent back to the eBay seller because I did connect it up again and it starts "ok" but the weird stuff is that I have to push the button again to turn it off (hard to hear about it ) but the really bad thing is that if I turn up the power a bit (after getting the starter off) the starter turns up again, even after the electrical "button" connections have been taken off. I think there's something bad about this and I'm pretty sure it's not official Yamaha components. I may have to hopefully sell it back and buy one from a Yamaha dealer.

The starter button should only be providing current to the relay when the starter button is pressed. Press in, relay closes, power is provided to the starter motor. Starter motor then cranks the main motor. Let off the button and current stops flowing to the relay. Main motor then runs while the starter motor stops and retracts from the flywheel teeth.

Would be nice to know what model motor we are talking about.
It's a 9.9 4-stroke, looks like the model is F9.9LMHB. And I am wondering if the relay is getting kind of funky, but I can't wonder how it would go "on" when the power circuity to it is off. Any thoughts on that? But thanks for all your help on this.

The starter relay has a power circuit and a control circuit.

Battery positive power is provided directly to one side of the power circuit. See the diagram above.

When the starter button is pressed, battery power is provided to the relay control circuit via the neutral safety switch. This causes the contacts within the power circuit to close which allows battery power to flow to the starter motor. The starter motor then does its magic.

The relay should close any time the starter button is pressed and the relay should open any time the starter button is released (not pressed).
