wow! after many posts and a lot of tinkering i have finally figured out why my 62' johnson seahorse rk24 will not turn over. i was convinced it was the wiring or solenoid but i finally got it!

under the flywheel is a little red colored box with a white button sticking out of it. there's also this brass colored thing that rotates back and forth. it has to rotate clockwise to push that little button down, (safety switch?). for some reason it's rotated forward not even touching that white button. i can move it back by hand and the boat will start right up! but how do i get the dang thing to stay there? i noticed two wires coming off it, (by the way this boat has the elctramatic shifter), but i don't know where those wires go...not sure if this will lead me to what i need to fix or not

so i'm putting it out there one more time....any suggestions?

Re: I got it!!!! Woohooo!!!!

UPDATE: okay, kept playing around with it and i now know the problem is not in those little black wires...i set up the throttle cable so that it now allows the throttle arm to come all the way back, bring the brass thing with it -- thereby closing the circut and allowing me to start the motor. BUT, when i go back to the controller and push the throttle lever all the way forward, and return it to the neutral position, the cable doesn't close the throttle all the way...it closes it enough to get the rpm's back to idle, but not enough to bring the brass thing back to close the circut. so, when i go to start the motor again it will not allow the circut to pass through.

so, does that mean my throttle cable is shot? or do i just need to adjust it somehow in the controller box...if so, how do i do that?

by the way, sorry about not know the names of all the parts or what they even do. hey, i'm a tile setter...aside from changing blades on my wetsaws and grinders, i don't normally deal with mechanical things!

I am curious as to what the heck the switch is?? You say the switch gets pressed at Idle. or at WOT ??

Sounds like a cable problem 1st.

If not you might try--
First unplug the two wires and see if it will start.

If it doesnt start in a safe place away from the spinning parts jumper the two wires coming out so the "switch is closed". See if it starts then.

That is the starter safety switch. Prevents starting with the throttle in a "fast" position. It also is the ground circuit for the vacuum cut-out switch. The vacuum cut-out switch prevents runaway under a no-load condition.

You say the throttle comes back far enough to idle, but it won't close the safety switch. That means to me that there is a serious lack of power. That throttle needs to come back far enough to close the switch and still idle. If fact it should remain closed at a pretty fast idle speed. My best bet is that it is running on one cylinder. Or, the spark/carburetor synchronization is seriously off. But I'm going with the one cylinder theory for now.

there's no lack of power...when i bring the throttle back to the neutral position with the control lever the motor idles fine...but then i have to go to the motor and close the safety switch by hand. for some reason the control cable won't close the switch like it's supposed to. i will mention also that the controller is freaking stiff when trying to move the throttle control and especially the start lever...i've checked to make sure there's no tight bends in the cable. not sure if you can lube those things somehow?

Re: I got it!!!! Woohooo!!!!

We don't seem to be communicating here. So you are saying the brass cam is off the safety switch when it is running at idle? It should be running at a pretty high speed when the spark is advanced that far (the cam is on the spark advance). That is why I suspect it is lacking power. If it was putting out the horsepower it should with that much advance, the RPMs would be racing.

If that is not what is happening, I don't have an answer for you.

Your throttle cable is probably kinked or something. But get the motor running correctly with the cable disconnected before messing with the control. The control should fit the motor, not the motor fit the control.

I was just looking at the parts manual for that engine (RK24) and it does not show what you are talking about very well. But if you want the parts manual, PM me with your email address and request and I'll send it too you.

Re: I got it!!!! Woohooo!!!!

sorry for the miscommunication guys...i figured out the problem. basically it comes down to the throttle cable being totally out of whack. i just have to figure out how to adjust it properly. i'll keep searching threads as i'm sure somebody's posted something about control cable adjustments...
