Re: I have a dilema

I think you need to stick with the old boat a little longer while you figure out exactly what you want in a newer boat. Then when you get that boat you will want to keep it for a long while.

OK trading the girl in is probably not going to happen.

This week.

I took her for a ride in the Jeep last night and even let her drive for a bit:eek: She realized how much she likes it and now doesn't want to get rid of it so it looks like I may be keeping the old, slow, ugly boat for a bit longer. You know driving a wrangler is alot like driving a boat but on land, you get that same free feeling.

I have a question no one is asking, would the trade benifit you $$ wise. Even though you do have time and "other stuff" into the jeep you do know you NEVER get that back out. If the boat may be worth more than what you realisticly could get out of the jeep I would go for it. Once you get the newer boat out on the water and aren't getting pounded any more you may realize why didn't I do this sooner. I am alot like you I think, sandrail, dirtbikes, snowmobiles, used to be a major jeep guy(moab is only a couple hours south) but I wouldn't trade my boat for any of them(and I raced dirtbikes my whole life). You could get the boat and rent a jeep the few times you go(thats what I do when in moab). Just throwing a different take out there.

Yep, its time for a new girl friend, not a new boat

Now wait a minute. How many of us have ever wished our wives would go along with gettin' a newer, bigger, nicer, faster boat? After I figured out that my current boat needed to be turned into something a bit larger and faster my wife kept arguing that what we have is paid for and it gets us on the water.

A couple of months ago we spent some time with a friend who has a larger boat than ours and she loved it, and as fate would have it I found a project boat ('79 Checkmate Eluder - I'd always been a huge fan of Checkmates) for a fair price. My wife was actually telling me to hurry up and get it before someone else does.

So IMHO, if you'll truly be happy with the "new" boat I'd go for it.

Yes the boats resale is a little higher than the Jeeps in other word I could not sell the Jeep and afford the boat. My mother actually has two Jeeps and one of which I can take any time I want to.

I am so damn confused on what I want to do now.

Girlfriend aside...no longer an issue for the sake of argument, so to speak.
Do YOU want a bigger boat with more room for storage, friends (the kind the of 'seat cover' friends the GF brings along), and a much better ride? Not to mention that speed, although not always the answer, is FUN!
Toys are toys. Plain and simple. What do or would you use more?
You said you have access to another Jeep to use at your leisure, do you have access to a bigger boat for the same? If it is a love of labor that you have in the Jeep, then it would be very hard to get rid of it. If it is a love of fun, then bye bye.
We can all give our "this is what I would do" opinions, but really, are you looking for someone to talk you into it, or out of it?

I have built toys in the past, none compare to the fun and enjoyment that my family and I have with our boat.
Along with a bigger boat comes bigger waters that I am not affraid to venture out on. We take it for long weekends far from home and I am never scared to go. In fact, next weekend we are going to Lake Michigan for a few days, NEVER in a million years would I dream of taking any of my previous boats.

So, there you go, plain and simple...uh, er, well, maybe plain.:D

I think I would like the bigger boat, I would definitly like to hit the bigger bodies of water, (Pacific Ocean Big) but also along with the bigger boat is a bigger cost of operating and with all the seat cover friends that don't know what chipping in for gas is. But I also like to go camping at Lake mohave and it would be nice to have the cuddy that the Sleek Craft offers and the speed to be able to get around. As for the Jeep I don't know what is greater the love of labor or the love of fun. I think my problem is when I finally finish building a toy I always want to get rid of it for another project.

Re: I have a dilema

How long have you had your boat? I would get it fixed up and run it around for a full season to figure out what kind of boat I really wanted. You will probably want a bigger or nicer boat than you are trying to trade for now. Once you know what you want then go for it. That may keep you from buying several different boats just to get to the one you want. As for the girlfriend it sounds like she is reacting well so you might as well keep her a little longer.

I have had this boat for a couple of years now but never really used it, It sat for a period before I picked it up and needed a little TLC. I have had several boats within the last 15 years but they have all been older or just small fishing boats. I do have an idea about what I want but of course most are way out of my price range and I am not one for financing toys so I will have to work my way up. Yes the girlfriend more or less just wants me to have what I want but she heres what I say and agrees to quickly and doesn't try to talk me out of anything even if it is a bad idea.

Re: I have a dilema

The girlfriend is ok with the old boat and is just happy to be on the water but see's most of our friends in newer nicer boats and we just went out for the day in a 2004 21 foot Ultra which is absolutely nothing like mine. She mainly complains about how rough it is and I think it is because of the tri hull.

You have no clue how much you said here. We can see things you might not be able to because it appears you might be a little...whipped? :D

It appears that she just might be the type who likes to keep up with the Jones'. All because the friends have newer boats does that mean you need a new one? If this lady is really happy with you, she would smile and appreciate everything you do for her, no questions. I say that she is more concerned about how she looks to her friends, and that is the real reason for a new boat. If she really was so into you, this would not even be discussed here. The fact you say "she is cool with it but..." tells us more about this whole situation than anything. I am sure there are a lot of us guys who have been there.

You are pretty lucky. Most girlfriends don't pull this until they actually have their claws planted deep (ie: married). If she does this to you now, and you just plod along, say "OhOooKaayy" and do whatever she wants, you are in a world of hurt. Much easier to get out of it now. When kids and such get involved, then you will pay through the nose forever.

In other words.... RUN LIKE HELL!

Now, if it is you who first brought up the idea of a new boat, then all bets are off. Blaming it on her would be unfair. If this is the case, then maybe she is the one who needs a new boyfriend! :D :D :D

Re: I have a dilema

Wow it seems you guys really think my girlfriend is that bad:eek: I really don't think so, She has never cost me any money and she actually chips in on everything, It was meerly her saying we should get the bigger boat, and how many women out there look at the husbands/boyfreinds 37 year old beat to crap boat with interior falling out and say wow what a beautiful boat. Like most everyone else in this country she would rather have a newer nicer boat but is 100% fine and content with the one we have. So lets just take her out of this equation all together.

Re: I have a dilema

Chris your boat will be worth more if it is reupholstered, which you want to do any way and if it is cleaned up. I have had a lot of boats and gone the bigger route for a while, and now I am back to a 18 ft CC which doesn't kill me on gas is easy to tow and load. It only holds 5 which is both good and bad. As far as what you could sell your Jeep for, I think you should really be asking how much it would cost to buy another one like it. You know what condition your current one is in. A different one will have some unknowns that come with it. Also if you keep and eye out from the end of boating season up and into tax time you might just find a bargin on a boat that you think you will like more. I have only made money on boats that I bought in the dead of winter. Christmas and taxes have a way of motivating people and several have accepted offers the next day after thinking about it.

Thanks, I was actually just talkin to a buddy of mine and he talked me into waiting until at least the end of September when people are trying to offload the boat before winter. I think I will get a better deal then and also know a little more of what I want in a boat.

I am doing ok so far I own my home, Toybox, Truck, Jeep, Boat, Sandrail, Quads, and motorcycle, all of which are in my name only, You can never fully trust a women especially in my situation, I own a business and have some assets. I am 30 Years old and she is 22, we have been together since she was 18 and I owned nothing. I have learned that nothing goes in OUR name until I put a ring on that finger and she fully agrees because who knows we could split tomorrow. I am sure that if the boat I really want comes around I will find a way to get it.
