trade up for a new girl friend
Yep, its time for a new girl friend, not a new boat
I have a question no one is asking, would the trade benifit you $$ wise. Even though you do have time and "other stuff" into the jeep you do know you NEVER get that back out. If the boat may be worth more than what you realisticly could get out of the jeep I would go for it. Once you get the newer boat out on the water and aren't getting pounded any more you may realize why didn't I do this sooner. I am alot like you I think, sandrail, dirtbikes, snowmobiles, used to be a major jeep guy(moab is only a couple hours south) but I wouldn't trade my boat for any of them(and I raced dirtbikes my whole life). You could get the boat and rent a jeep the few times you go(thats what I do when in moab). Just throwing a different take out there.
Yes the boats resale is a little higher than the Jeeps in other word I could not sell the Jeep and afford the boat. My mother actually has two Jeeps and one of which I can take any time I want to.
I am so damn confused on what I want to do now.
Girlfriend aside...no longer an issue for the sake of argument, so to speak.
Do YOU want a bigger boat with more room for storage, friends (the kind the of 'seat cover' friends the GF brings along), and a much better ride? Not to mention that speed, although not always the answer, is FUN!
Toys are toys. Plain and simple. What do or would you use more?
You said you have access to another Jeep to use at your leisure, do you have access to a bigger boat for the same? If it is a love of labor that you have in the Jeep, then it would be very hard to get rid of it. If it is a love of fun, then bye bye.
We can all give our "this is what I would do" opinions, but really, are you looking for someone to talk you into it, or out of it?
I have built toys in the past, none compare to the fun and enjoyment that my family and I have with our boat.
Along with a bigger boat comes bigger waters that I am not affraid to venture out on. We take it for long weekends far from home and I am never scared to go. In fact, next weekend we are going to Lake Michigan for a few days, NEVER in a million years would I dream of taking any of my previous boats.
So, there you go, plain and simple...uh, er, well, maybe plain.![]()
How long have you had your boat? I would get it fixed up and run it around for a full season to figure out what kind of boat I really wanted. You will probably want a bigger or nicer boat than you are trying to trade for now. Once you know what you want then go for it. That may keep you from buying several different boats just to get to the one you want. As for the girlfriend it sounds like she is reacting well so you might as well keep her a little longer.
The girlfriend is ok with the old boat and is just happy to be on the water but see's most of our friends in newer nicer boats and we just went out for the day in a 2004 21 foot Ultra which is absolutely nothing like mine. She mainly complains about how rough it is and I think it is because of the tri hull.
You have no clue how much you said here. We can see things you might not be able to because it appears you might be a little...whipped?
It appears that she just might be the type who likes to keep up with the Jones'. All because the friends have newer boats does that mean you need a new one? If this lady is really happy with you, she would smile and appreciate everything you do for her, no questions. I say that she is more concerned about how she looks to her friends, and that is the real reason for a new boat. If she really was so into you, this would not even be discussed here. The fact you say "she is cool with it but..." tells us more about this whole situation than anything. I am sure there are a lot of us guys who have been there.
You are pretty lucky. Most girlfriends don't pull this until they actually have their claws planted deep (ie: married). If she does this to you now, and you just plod along, say "OhOooKaayy" and do whatever she wants, you are in a world of hurt. Much easier to get out of it now. When kids and such get involved, then you will pay through the nose forever.
In other words.... RUN LIKE HELL!
Now, if it is you who first brought up the idea of a new boat, then all bets are off. Blaming it on her would be unfair. If this is the case, then maybe she is the one who needs a new boyfriend!![]()

So lets just take her out of this equation all together.
Chris your boat will be worth more if it is reupholstered, which you want to do any way and if it is cleaned up. I have had a lot of boats and gone the bigger route for a while, and now I am back to a 18 ft CC which doesn't kill me on gas is easy to tow and load. It only holds 5 which is both good and bad. As far as what you could sell your Jeep for, I think you should really be asking how much it would cost to buy another one like it. You know what condition your current one is in. A different one will have some unknowns that come with it. Also if you keep and eye out from the end of boating season up and into tax time you might just find a bargin on a boat that you think you will like more. I have only made money on boats that I bought in the dead of winter. Christmas and taxes have a way of motivating people and several have accepted offers the next day after thinking about it.
I'd be inclined to caution about the trickeries of a woman ......mostly because I'm alone an' bitter . (Well not too bitter) But seriously , if you want a new toy you'll figure that out - but make it your own deal . And keep it yours by keeping just your sig on the papers......Oh wait i see your in Cali...

You should'nt hold back. Next time, say what you really think![]()
