Well, yesterday was awesome and today was a complete bust.

The boy and I got together for lunch with a new acquaintance and his son yesterday. The guy is a big-time boat fella and used to own a large marina. He still owns a LARGE lot (many acres) where he stores boats, trailers and whatnot. (BTW - he has a big Chieftain on the lot which has already been stripped and has the original trailer.)

Anyway, after lunch we went over to check out his current project; a 51 foot houseboat with a pair of 300HP outboards hung on the back. Very cool! His restoration is about 90% done and he hopes to have it on the water again by the end of August and has invited us to go along on the re-maiden. :D

After we checked out the houseboat we went over to his lot to just hang out and talk about his other boats and such. He has a couple of 4-wheelers there so his boy took my boy for a ride, then showed him how it works. They kept taking turns until it was time to leave. Good stuff all around! Pix below.

Today was a bust because the boy and I spent 5 1/2 hours round trip driving down the road to pick up a trolling motor from a craigslist ad which turned out to be an attempted ripoff. It's a 52 lb. thrust foot controlled 12v MotorGuide which would be perfect for my KF. But it was broken and the seller didn't mention that in his ad or when contacted prior to the trip. :mad2:

Okay, time to talk about masking, wait duration and tape removal.

Yes, I've done a lot of reading and watched a lot of videos and for the most part they're all about house painting, anti-fouling paint, fiberglass, auto-body and clear coating after unmasking. Not a lot of help for single stage enamel painting like we're doing here. Using a razor to cut through the paint bond just leads to water intrusion if a clear coat isn't applied over top.

I'd like to hear from the iboats folks who actually used enamel paint and had a 2-tone (or more) color scheme.

So what did you do? How long did you wait before applying the second color? How long after masking did you wait before removing the masking tape and covering? I've read that I should remove the tape while the paint is still a bit wet, like 4 to 6 hours after painting. Is that about right?

Of course, since I'll be applying 2 coats of the black accent color over the base white color, I'll have to reapply the entire mask a second time. Right? The Majic Paint says to wait 24 hours before applying a second coat. Remasking while the accent is still that soft makes me a bit nervous. (Moreso than usual! )

I bought this 3M Vinyl Tape 471 + PN6408 masking tape but after doing some reading I'm not sure that it's what I need. The product description says:
  • Provides clean removal without adhesive residue after a 30-min. bake cycle at 250°F/121°C
But I don't know if that means that it is required to bake as stated above in order to work properly. :noidea:

Man, I sure am glad that I got that paint on there when I did. We're definitely into our summer weather pattern. It's been raining every day since I painted and is forecast to continue like that... until late August.

It's a bit of a challenge to add the 2nd color but I did mine the next day after the paint was set enough to mask without damaging the base coat although I used hardener. The paint was still gassing out too so I got a good chemical bond.

I masked, shot the first coat, waited 2 hours, shot the 2nd coat, waited 2 more hours and pulled the tape.

No the tape doesn't need to be baked they mean it will still come off even after being roasted.

I rolled and tipped my paint, and it seems like ages ago. But I think it went like this:

Painted my base color, and waited approximately 24 hours to mask for the stripe. The base color wasn't tacky, but I could definitely tell it wasn't hardened. I experimented by putting a piece of tape in an inconspicuous spot, and lifted it two hours later. It didn't take paint with it, so I masked out the full stripe on both sides of the boat.

I waited about 18 hours before I put the second coat on. It was definitely still tacky, so I probably put the second coat on thicker than I should have.

I gave it another maybe 18-24 hours before I removed the masking.

I put a small accent stripe on the top and bottom of the main stripe. I did this with rattle can Rusto Professional. To do the accent, I masked, sprayed, waited about 20 minutes, sprayed again, then almost immediately removed the tape. I had some intrusion in some places, and touched them up the next day. The accent stripes are not wonderful, though, and I'll likely be covering them over with some vinyl pinstriping.

I hope that helps. Good luck!

I used rustoleum enamel paint, ( and believe it to be much like the majic) and what I did was tape it / spray it / wait 2 hours and spray the second coat / and then spent about fifteen minutes cleaning up, before removing the tape being careful to pull slowly and at an angle away from the line ( if that makes sense ) I ended up with real nice clean lines and only had to tape once , and had 2 coats done in a few hrs.

Happy Independence Day! :usa2: :usa: :cheer2:

Thanks for all the good info on the paint and masking. :)

Today we (all 3 of us!) went out to cut the masking paper to the correct shape. My wife did the work, the boy assisted and I supervised while sipping coffee!

We got one side cut and will use that as the master for the other side. My wife thought it would be quick to do but it actually took about 2 1/2 hours to get it done. Will do the cutting for the opposite side indoors in the AC tomorrow or Friday. We'll also cut the mask for the stern as well. We're hoping to paint on Saturday (the 7th) so I've allowed 2 full days to get everything cut. Maybe we'll make it on time! :p

This evening we're going to the home of my new boat guy acquaintance. Gonna hang out there and then watch fireworks later. :becky:

My wife is meticulous about such things. If I tried to do this it would take a week!

First side cut to shape. Final length at the bow will be cut before painting.
2.jpg

Both side pieces cut. The other side will be cut in the house. The stern should be pretty quick.

Hey guys, I need a recommendation for a low adhesive strength vinyl masking tape.

Weather was perfect this morning so we went out and started prepping for the black accent coat. It's been 10 days since I applied the 2nd white coat.

While masking with 3M PN06408 vinyl masking tape, 1/2 inch wide, we had to do some minor repositioning and some paint lifted up in a couple of spots. That's with only a few minutes of contact. Not good! So we gently removed the tape and are looking for a replacement.

According to the specs, this vinyl tape has 23 oz/in adhesion. I'm searching now for something else with even less stickiness. Any recommendations?

And maybe 10 days of baking in the garage wasn't enough for the Majic tractor paint without hardener? :noidea:

All right, I ordered the 3M 06529 tape from a local auto parts store and it'll be here in 48 hours. Will find something else to do in the meantime. My wife started feeling poorly later this morning so waiting awhile is a good idea anyway. She's coming down with a cold.

I'm just glad that I no longer have an arbitrary deadline putting me under pressure! :p

Oh man that sucks, I used Frog Tape 24 hours later to mask off for the accent stripe while the base coat paint was till gassing out. Did the first coat lift off of the second coat of paint or did they both come off to the primer? Reason I ask is because that's why I do the chemical bond of 2 coats in 2 hours an hour after primer so they melt together and aren't just layers one on top of another.

I have a habit of removing the registration decals every year to put on the new ones and one of them could lift a 5 Lb weight LOL. No paint lifted off of my SS or Chief hulls although the 2 coats I put on my SN didn't fare as well, it lifted badly without hardener and with more time between coats even with sanding between.

Hey, it took me a lot more than 2 hours to apply the 2nd coat of paint!

That speck and its little brother were from the second coat, so not a major issue.

The Majic instructions say to wait 24 hours before applying a second coat. I'd planned on "pushing" that by trying a second coat at 3 or 4 hours. I'd test in an inconspicuous spot first, natch.

Spraying alkyd enamel without hardener really changes things. The paint stays "soft" for a loooooooong time. Like months. Or even a year or more. Just how soft is the issue. I've read hotrod forums where guys would spray an initial coat and let the car sit for 3 or 4 months before doing anything else. I'd prefer not to wait that long.

Then again, I live in sunny Florida where the heat can help cook the paint a bit better than the guys way up north.

Picked up the new masking tape from NAPA this afternoon. It definitely has less tack than the other blue tape I'd used before. Took it home and immediately put a test strip on the stern of the KF where it will be painted over with black anyway so even if the paint lifts it'll be hidden by the new coat over top. We finished just as a t-storm rolled in and it started raining those big, fat raindrops.

Will leave the test strip on the hull for several hours before pulling it off. That should mimic paint day conditions a bit.

IF the paint pulls up this time then I'm going to just let the hull "cook" for awhile longer before trying again.

If the paint doesn't pull up with the new tape, then we're good to go for painting at the next available opportunity.

Hey! Been a while, but wow! Looks great... But no longer very Frugal... ;)

Well howdy again! It's been a long, seemingly unending road, but at least we're having a journey!

I hear ya about the frugality. While it's not been really expensive, I could have saved a lot of time and effort if I'd just stuck to my guns 18 months ago and simply replaced the transom, stuck the 50HP Merc on the back and gone fishing! But I tend to get side-tracked... a little.
