Okay, time to talk about masking, wait duration and tape removal.
Yes, I've done a lot of reading and watched a lot of videos and for the most part they're all about house painting, anti-fouling paint, fiberglass, auto-body and clear coating after unmasking. Not a lot of help for single stage enamel painting like we're doing here. Using a razor to cut through the paint bond just leads to water intrusion if a clear coat isn't applied over top.
I'd like to hear from the iboats folks who actually used enamel paint and had a 2-tone (or more) color scheme.
So what did you do? How long did you wait before applying the second color? How long after masking did you wait before removing the masking tape and covering? I've read that I should remove the tape while the paint is still a bit wet, like 4 to 6 hours after painting. Is that about right?
Of course, since I'll be applying 2 coats of the black accent color over the base white color, I'll have to reapply the entire mask a second time. Right? The Majic Paint says to wait 24 hours before applying a second coat. Remasking while the accent is still that soft makes me a bit nervous. (Moreso than usual! )
I bought this 3M Vinyl Tape 471 + PN6408 masking tape but after doing some reading I'm not sure that it's what I need. The product description says:
- Provides clean removal without adhesive residue after a 30-min. bake cycle at 250°F/121°C
But I don't know if that means that it is
required to bake as stated above in order to work properly. :noidea:
