Karma gods are shining today!!! I found this gem on CL for $50!! PO's grandfather gave him this motor a couple of years ago, been sitting in his shop ever since. He decided to just get rid of it and listed it for $50, I just happened to be the first caller. Picked it up today and he gave me the outboard cart it was sitting on. He said he should have done more research before listing it for such a low price. I told him he was helping a family get on the water and also let him know this motor (even though he didnt know if it ran) was well worth $500. Woo Freakin Hoo....

I am a first time Mercury owner so bear with me...

Serial #4129433 turns out its a 75 merc in prestine condtion. Pulled the plugs (freaked out cause they look like glow plugs??) hooked up the compression guage at WOT and both cyl read 100 psi. Happy, I reinstalled the plugs hooked up the gas tank and within 6 pulls she started right up!!! Let her idle for a bit and now she starts before Im even through the first pull...

Now the questions, As I am new to mercury I noticed she wasnt peeing very well. Blew the oriface and tube out with air, and wouldnt you know it started peeing a nice good strong stream. However, at idle it seems like it stops peeing for a bit and just sputters then all of a sudden a good solid stream. Is there a thermostat in these?? or is it simply that it needs to build up certain pressure before releasing??

Unlike Evinrude/Johnson, how do I check the gear oil?? I can only see one screw even remotely similar to aforementioned units...

Additonally if you notice the "troll" switch in the pics - what is this for?? Dont fret, I will be buying a service manual but need a little advice for now.

Thanks in advance!!!

Re: I LOVE Craigslist!!! Merc 110 9.8hp find

Well I found the manuals online, but I am pretty sure they refer to newer models. I am still trying to figure out that "troll switch" and what its use is. Also feel like an idiot, found gearcase drain all is good there too... Figured out the centerfire sparkplugs I was referring to. Can anyone help locate an earlier model service manual??

Thanks

The troll switch is i a switch that lets the motor run while you troll along fishing

That troll switch operates a tilt bracket. When engaged you can manually tilt the engine up, the bracket will drop down; lower the engine and the engine is supported in a new position. It will allow you troll with the engine tilted up a little, hence troll slower. When done trolling for the day, release it, raise the engine and you're back to your original tilt setting.

As to water, you should have a good stream at all speeds. I'm guessing that you should check out the rubber connectors on the pick-up tube and maybe the plate on top of the impeller. It seems like your pump will push the water thru the engine with no problem, if it has plenty of water.

Troll switch is a shallow water drive. They've been around for years on OMCs and Mercs. Raised the switch up then tilt your motor up and it will stay in a 'raised' position for shallow water running. Flip the switch down then raise the motor just a bit and the motor will go back down. An old Evinrude I've got has something similar and they call it shallow water drive. Same thing.

Pulled the plugs (freaked out cause they look like glow plugs??)

I have a '69 7.5 which is similar and uses those plugs. The guy I spoke to said if you do a lot of trolling or low rpm use then go to a conventional plug.

Hooked up the compression guage at WOT and both cyl read 100 psi. Happy, I reinstalled the plugs hooked up the gas tank and within 6 pulls she started right up!!! Let her idle for a bit and now she starts before Im even through the first pull...

Ditto with mine. But I have crummy compression. You got a deal.

The motor should get a fresh water pump impeller every couple years. They are cheap and easy to install. I suggest you get one.

On mine I just lay the motor on it's side, remove the screw, and fill it up. IIRC these only hold like 4.5 ozs
