I need to replace the upeer shift saft seal on a VP 270

I noticed oil coming from under the cover that has the 270 label on it. After rmoving the cover, I noticed the oil was coming from my shift saft. After doing research, it appears that the sift saft seal will start to leak when they get old. Quiestion is, Can you remove the shift shaft without removing the upper unit from the outdrive? It seems that the four screws can be removed and the shift shaft uit will slide out.
