Has anyone done a transom repair to a i/o Bayliner? I've gotten some advice on a the Bayliner sight, but wanted to ask here also.

If so, do you have any pix that you can post?

I have an '85 Bayliner 1950 w/ a Volvo Penta i/o. The last time we took it out I noticed water entering the bilge (normally dry). So the next morning on closer inspection I noticed one of the lower bolts that hold the transom mounting bracket on was starting to pull thru. After tapping around on the transom, it seems to have about a 1 foot section of rotten wood in there. Not really looking forward to digging into it (have already replaced the floor), but its not worth anything the way it sits. Thanks for the help.

Gonna' try and make this as painless as possible for you, but here's what you need to do. Remove engine, remove outdrive, remove inner and outer transom shields and brackets. From the inside remove all rotted wood which means you need to cut away the first layer of fiberglass. This will probably lead to rotten wood in the support stringer as well. Replace wood with marine grade lumber such as Okume or the like. Reglass all and replace all.
Now you can go boating !!!
Had all of my pics of job I did lost when previous pc crashed so I'll be of no help there. Just don't be surprised that about half way through the process you decide to throw in the towel and buy a new boat. Total cost for materials about $400.00 - labor, no idea.
Oh yea, that one square foot section of bad lumber is just the beginning - .

GC,

Thanks. Thats what I was anticipating. Fortunately, (or unfortunaltely because my seat boxes will have to be cut back out) I just replaced the floor and the stringers are in good shape.

I didn't wait until half way through to throw in the towel and buy a new boat. This discovered this almost two months ago, and the next week we bought another boat because we didn't want to miss the entire boating season.

I've done too much work to the Bay to just scrap it now. It's a labor of love and hate at the same time.

Good for you for not scrapping that boat. Since you now have something to run around in this summer then the pressure isn't on to finish the other project. I've been tinkering with mine for over a year now and still have a couple of months left. But I did the same thing as you - bought another boat so the urgency isn't there. Living in Florida we have a year round boating season so I'm just loafing along with repairs. Which reminds me, I need to get some more stainless screws - !!!!!!
Let us know how the boat turns out and post some pics if you get the chance. Good luck and have fun. :D
