Well, my wife and I (and my mom and dad) just celebrated my 1 year sobriety a couple of weeks ago. When I quit drinking I told Dee that when I was sure I was done drinking I would quit smoking. However, I really enjoy smoking. I know that sounds like a strange thing to say, but I do. I like to blow smoke rings, and I can send smoke rings through other rings and stuff, and I just like to smoke. I have smoked for 25 years, and it's like smoking is just part of who I am.
Well, the time has come to quit, so I went to my doctor and asked about Zyban/Wellbutrin (sp?). He prescribed it last Thursday morning, I got it filled immediately, and haven't smoked since Friday. I had tried to just put the cigarettes down a couple of times this past year, but I couldn't do it. With the Zyban the cravings are totally manageable, and since I know that if I smoke (if I sneek a puff here or there) I am just prolonging the pain of quitting, I have been smoke free for 5 days and each day is easier than the day before.
For anyone out there wanting to quit smoking, Zyban makes the physical side of it easy. If you have the will, this prescription is a huge help. While I was at my Doc's office he said that if the Zyban didn't work for me there is a new prescription available that he has been giving to older retired people who have smoked their whole lives and the success rate is right at 100%. I don't remember what the name of it is, but he said it was as expensive as buying cigarettes. I figured if the Zyban didn't work, the other stuff still sounded like a bargain considering that in few weeks time I wouldn't be using the prescription or cigarettes, so it's win - win.
Anyhoo, so I have thrown another piece of useless baggage overboard. It is nice to be able to leave the house without having to round up my smokes and lighter, and to get up in the morning and not have to get a smoke first thing. I guess my only vice left is my love of bacon.....
