Well, my wife and I (and my mom and dad) just celebrated my 1 year sobriety a couple of weeks ago. When I quit drinking I told Dee that when I was sure I was done drinking I would quit smoking. However, I really enjoy smoking. I know that sounds like a strange thing to say, but I do. I like to blow smoke rings, and I can send smoke rings through other rings and stuff, and I just like to smoke. I have smoked for 25 years, and it's like smoking is just part of who I am.

Well, the time has come to quit, so I went to my doctor and asked about Zyban/Wellbutrin (sp?). He prescribed it last Thursday morning, I got it filled immediately, and haven't smoked since Friday. I had tried to just put the cigarettes down a couple of times this past year, but I couldn't do it. With the Zyban the cravings are totally manageable, and since I know that if I smoke (if I sneek a puff here or there) I am just prolonging the pain of quitting, I have been smoke free for 5 days and each day is easier than the day before.

For anyone out there wanting to quit smoking, Zyban makes the physical side of it easy. If you have the will, this prescription is a huge help. While I was at my Doc's office he said that if the Zyban didn't work for me there is a new prescription available that he has been giving to older retired people who have smoked their whole lives and the success rate is right at 100%. I don't remember what the name of it is, but he said it was as expensive as buying cigarettes. I figured if the Zyban didn't work, the other stuff still sounded like a bargain considering that in few weeks time I wouldn't be using the prescription or cigarettes, so it's win - win.

Anyhoo, so I have thrown another piece of useless baggage overboard. It is nice to be able to leave the house without having to round up my smokes and lighter, and to get up in the morning and not have to get a smoke first thing. I guess my only vice left is my love of bacon.....

I quit cold turkey 22 yrs ago and never looked back, presently the mere scent of tobacco smoke annoys me.
Good luck to you and your family in fighting off this dreaded addiction. ;)

Good for you, SW. I used Zyban too, back in 98. Worked like a charm.

Re: I quit Smoking Too

I decided to quit about 3 years ago, bought myself Zyban (was very expensive) read all the negative effects and the box is still at home unopened and unused ..... but apperently it's the best and it works, but I really enjoy smoking and drinking, especially smoking while drinking .... I then decided that I only live once and I'm not gonna give up the most favourite things I enjoy most .... I am most likely to be killed doing my inflatable boat racing ....

Re: I quit Smoking Too

Good morning and thanks for all the kind words!
Nova II - My doctor told me that if the Zyban didn't work for me that he would prescribe Chantrix (sp?). He said that so far everyone that he prescribed it to, who wanted to quit, were able to quit. So I wish you the best with it!

Deejaycee - Your words were precisly my sentiment up until this last year. But since I turned 39 last March, maybe I'm having a mid-life crisis? I don't know.

An additional note regarding Zyban - Everytime I tried to quit in the past I had all kinds of weird cravings and ate everything in sight. Not so with Zyban! I love this stuff!

Hey SW. Are you doing the "Program" for the alchy addiction? I am, been clean better than a year, and is a great lifestyle. I'll never say I'm done, cured, whatever. I just work for another 24 hrs. sober.

This thread and another smokeout thread has me once again lookin' hard at giving up the butts. Zyban is an AD, and does have side affects that long term do not suit me. :D
