Im looking at trading my 17' Sea Ray for this 24' Bayliner below. As you can see it does need some work. With the details below, could you guys tell me about how much I might be looking at to repair what needs fixed, and if you think it would be worth it to even trade. I really want a bigger boat!

"Primarily Looking for a nice fishing boat 17- 19 Ft to trade my 24' Baylner for. If you have something else to trade let me know.

I would keep and fix it but my wife isn't into boating and I don't need a boat this big.

Here's the info about my boat.

It has a canvas top that is in fair shape.
The clear panels are a bit scuffed.
It has a Porta potti, icebox, sink and alcolhol stove.
The engine is a freshwater cooled Chevy with a Volvo 280 outdrive.
I replaced the exhaust manifolds when I did the engine rebuild and I think it has about 100 hours. Need to check the meter.

It has a 1997 EZ-Loader trailer with it. It is an excellent trailer, tows beautifully.

What it needs.
1. Seawater pump installed. I have it and they usually cost about 180.00
2. Bilge blower hoses. Plastic hose are cheap and look like dryer hose. The blower is OK.
3. Outdrive "hold down" hooks. The outdrive sometimes pops up in reverse. Going forward is no problem.
4. It might need some guages since the existing ones have condensation in them.
5. Outdrive lift needs some care. You need to assist the outdrive when lifting it up. The lifting device has a spring pressure and friction assembly that is weak so it doesn't lift the outdrive very well. This is the weak link of the Volvo 280 outdrives.
6. It might need an alternator. These are about $100 locally. It is just a typical GM one wire alternator with the maranizing screens installed.
Beyond that, this a rock solid boat that starts, runs, and goes really well and I think you will enjoy it."

You know what you have now and unless you buy new you wont know what you have until after you bought it.

What years are the respective boats? I see one is "87 & the bayliner is what? I agree with f'in....You know what you have.....The good news is that it is a Volvo & you can get parts...The trailer is worth 1500-2000K or so....
How handy are you? Where in Wa? You would need to inspect closer to see the hull condition....
It's worth a look.....JK

My Sea Ray is the 87. I forgot what year the Bayliner is, but Im sure it is a couple years older. Im pretty handy with a wrench, so Im not to worried about that. I was just wondering what it would take to fix the problems he has listed....like will I need a whole new outdrive, or the things he listed would be fairly cheap and easy to fix.
If I have to spend 500.00 to fix the listed problems myself, than I would be ok with that...but if I have to spend a few thousand I would pass.

Haut Medoc, I live just outside of Shelton.

Thanks guys...open to all suggestions!

The tilt problem is likely just a bent ram. They can be removed and straightened. I did that on my old 270 and it was not hard, but it was time consuming. The hold down hooks are a wear item. They are a bit expensive for what you get but not a lot of money in the whole scheme of things. There is quite a bit of disassembly required to put them in. Bilge blower hose is cheap and easy to deal with, can't imagine why the seller didn't just fix that... Alternator is easy but not cheap if you use the correct marine version. Probably find one on eBay easily enough.

I'd look for other problems too, like a rotted transom, sole, and/or stringers.

That Bayliner looks about a '79. they were apparently better built then, than the mid 80's vintage Bayliners

You never know..but, by the way the owner describes it, he does seem to know what he's talking about and is pretty in tune with the mechanics of this boat... that could be a good thing.

I agree with inscreen, its better you know what you have. But if you are into a larger boat, then, its a go forward thing.

That said, I've not known of used boats that understand the meaning of "limited" or "planned" repair budgets, they usually bust expectations.

My latest with a 5.7 Merc started easy, ran great during the checkout. Over 2 years, its got 2 new cyl heads, water pump, fuel pump, new drive lower unit, overhauled upper drive housing, new bellows, new fuel tank, new bilge pumps & switches, new batteries, new battery switch, new head, new deck covers, repaired hatch, repaired freshwater water pump....you get the idea.

Not meaning to discourage you, but take your time to thoroughly inspect it.

Will your current tow rig handle the bigger load?

I would consider getting the Sea Ray appraised or look up the value in the boating mags/traders etc. Its important to know what you're giving up in addition to what you are getting in a swap. See if you can find something comparable. Also look at the prices of the boat models/sizes you are interested in. The sale of your boat and some cash or credit may put you into something that is ready to go and maybe more reliable than that fixer upper.
As an aside, I would sure like to know where you can get a marine alternator for $100, as the seller is quoting. I think $250-350 is more like it, depending on quality and features desired.
Lots and lots of boats to choose from in Puget Sound and your current boat would give you lots of opportunities in the Sound and lakes around here.
Previous posters said that you know what you have now, and I think that is a major consideration. Good luck.

Re: I really need some advise about boat trade...

Like Bondo said, the biggest issue is rot, boats that old are prime candidates unless it spent its life in covered storage in a dry climate. I'd be looking to go way newer, rather than older...
You have a 19 year old boat now, that probably won't be that hard to sell being a Sea Ray powered by a Merc....Why not go about 3'longer, and about 10 years newer!!
