I rebuilt my carbs yesterday with the help of iboats, Thanks... Truly saved me some bucks which makes the misses happyd:)

Here is what I found... When I took the silencer plate off it had a bead of silicone around it. I exactly knew what was wrong with it,,,sure enough some silicone had gotten into the carbs. I thought what an idiot... Gas and silicone!!! But anyways. got the carbs cleaned out and intake and spark plugs sprayed with deep creep and let it sit all night. went out this morning left the plugs out and turned the engine over and let it spit the extra out and installed plugs and let it run for 5 minutes and turned it off... waited another 4 hours for compleatly cool down and went and bumped the switch and it started like a new one. Itching to get out on the lake an let it rip...

1 question though... What rpm shoud this motor be idle at? This one idles at about 3500 isnt this a little high?

Re: I rebuilt my carbs.

sounds like you need to link and synk, what engine? prob. should idle about 1100/1200 on muffs and 900/1000 rpm's in the water with the engine in neutral..

3500 is over half the wide open throttle RPM -- yes that's too high. An outboard should not be rev'ed over 1500 - 2000 max in neutral. Idle speed should be in 750 range but since we have no idea which engine this is, we can't provide an exact spec. Are you sure the tach is accurate? You should be able to listen and tell what normal idle is. At 3500 RPM shifting into forward or reverse will eventually break something.

its an 77 85 hp johnson... It hasn't been that high..until I rebuilt the carbs,,,, 3 weeks ago we(myself and buddy) were fishing and it wouldn't idle so while i was that the controls he adjusted the linkage to help it idle and since I put the kit in the the carbs its idling fast...so I'm thinking its where he adjusted the linkage... but I will do a sync and link this weekend anyway...

it is to much to explain here, but here's a few, normal wear, link and synk should be done as normal maintenance. when carbs are removed parts are not in the exact location from wich they were removed, gaskets thicker/thinner ? throttle plates timmed? idle and full throttle timming all plays a role in how the engine performs, and its longivity.......

OK, I re adjusted the linkage to where they were before my buddy adjusted them and got the rpm back to 900 rpm on muffs... And yes silvertip I was wrong it wasn't 3500 (FEELING STUPID) I meant to say 1500 rpm

650-700 in gear, with the engine at normal height in the water would be a good idle rpm.

Link and sync is very important ... it sets the WOT timing. Set it wrong and bye bye motor. Idle is always set in gear, in the water @ 600 to 650 rpm. See shop manual for timing procedure or find Joe Reeves method for setting w/o running the motor. Shop manual will tell you the degrees to set for.
