I thought I had a prop seal problem but....

I had convinced my self that I had a bad prop seal, but after thinking ab out it I never really had a problem with it until I replaced the lower unit water pump. Could there be something I could have overlooked that would have caused a small amount of oil to pool in the prop carrier area.

If your lower pump housing was overheated it may be warped, your vertical drive shaft seal is in the lower housing. Also may have bad gasket there.

did you maybe forget to put that quad ring back in that goes between the upper and lower unit

is this the seal that slides on the shaft after you mount the pump housing? yes i did.

No, it`s a small O ring, flat .It goes between the upper and lower unit just to the right of the water pump housing

what does it mount on? the water tube? on the pump housing?

In the recessed area just to the right of the stud.Lower part of the epic.

yep i put it in. its a very small o-ring that sandwiches between the water pump body

the quad ring on mine is not in water pump it is on the outer case sandwiched between both halves. But mine might be alot older or different model.

the drive is a pre alpha 140 merc i/o
