In the recent passing of a much respected and knowledgeable member, Tashasdaddy, I was thinking of a way that we could consolidate our knowledge areas in case someone comes in here, is new, a little nervous about asking a question, they could PM that person with the knowledge about that subject area. I know, we always speak about "post it in the forum so everybody can learn." Well, some people don't feel comfy doing that and while I recommend people make a thread about their question, some members get upset that they didn't use the "search" function and they posted a previously-answered question.

Since I would rather a new member get the help they need than the hard time that they don't, I've decided to make a thread so our regular posters can list their knowledge areas so people can PM them with a question.

Please note, if you do post your knowledge areas in this thread, that means you don't mind people pm'ing you with their questions.

I'm hoping that TD can live on via this post, because he was so helpful to everyone that we could, in his passing, organize our knowledge areas so our members can still get some help when they need it, and via PM, if they want it.

It is my sincere hope that the mods can make this a sticky, so it doesn't get lost forever.

My knowledge areas in order of strength:

1. Computers (building, fixing, etc)
2. Airplane maintenance
3. RC airplanes, helis, boats and cars
4. Scooters and motorcycle riding issues
5. Vehicle maintenance
6. Boating maintenance (this means I know very little)

Somewhere in there is electrical knowledge. Probably 3.5.

The best way to Honor Bob would be to Welcome new members with open arms and answer their questions and point them in the right direction as he did, with courtesy & respect

Bad idea. Just check out the sigs of a lot of our experts.

PMing them technical questions is a strict no-no.

TD's pet peeve was PMed technical questions addressing him personally and ignoring the other 250,000 members.

Look at his signature. Ok, I goofed.

Well, no point in this thread continuing. JB, can you lock this? Thanks!

Ayuh,... Gotta agree....

Managin' your posts, 'n helping folks in the forums is enough...
In the forums, I pick, 'n choose, based on my knowledge, 'n mood...
PM's ya gotta keep deleting, or the box fills up, 'n NOBODY can pm ya, when needed...

I love iboats, 'n believe I've been helpin' a few folks, 'n makin' others laugh...
What you're proposing for pm's is what the open forums are All about...

Bob (TD) would want the help to be out here where everyone could see it. In the short time that I knew him I learned that he wanted to help people, he enjoyed working on boat motors and helping others work on them. He found Brandon and guided him in diagnostics, he saw a person that wanted to learn and be able to help others and was willing to learn. I also met that young man and he is the person that TD has described. TD was a kind and gentle man, he loved to see children have a good time. When we were working on the Florida getaways he always tried to plan for the children to have fun also. He genuinely cared for people and wanted to help them. If there was ever a good man TD (Bob Griffis) was that man. You could ask for information and he would provide it gladly. I personally will miss him for a long time to come.

I agree. I get PMs asking for technical info somewhat frequently, even though my signature asks people not to do so.

My objection to PMs isn't rooted in lack of desire to help - its in the fact that it limits the number of people who can be helped by my response. Remember that this is not just an active forum, its also a database full of very good information. Only if that information is in a stored thread, however, can it be serached and accessed.

In addition, my view of it, is that I am going to make mistakes from time to time. Because of this and which I think is true of all of us, there is no opportunity for another member to catch the mistake and correct it.

My 2 cents - keep it in the forum threads, please!

I agree that pm's are not the place for ??'s but I have never scolded anyone for not using the search function and get annoyed when others do. If everyone used the search function then this site would just be dock side chat. Pretty much every question regarding boats has been answered at some point
