Re: If you won the lottery.....

Wow...I don't know what to say guys! Thank you! Thank you to each and every one who has served in any capacity, and to those that support us! Today has been crazy for sure...the news has NO CLUE what actually went on here today. Comfort can come from some of the weirdest places. Whodathunk it would come from a boating forum! :)

Continue to pray for each of our troops and civies in harm's way today. We appreciate it greatly! And so do our families!

Sorry sax...I promise I didn't mean to hi-jack your thread. Please...carry on the lotto dreaming! :D

Not a problem! I'm Active Duty Army myself. Been to Mosul(OIF II 2004), Tal Aafar(OIF III 2005), and Baghdad(OIF IV 2007) as infantry in the 82nd Airborne. I was enlisted for 5 1/2 years. I now live the cush life of an Apache Pilot! Still in flight school in Fort Rucker. What do you do?

Also, where in Baghdad? I was there all of 2007 to March of '08 in COP Callahan. Not a good time.

Let's see, 5-6 mil ... approx 1/2 would go to church/missions. Pay for Target's ride home and give him the funds to avoid the sandbox. Maybe get a new SUV. And maybe find a nice hunting camp/property to purchase. Other than that, invest and save. Nothing else much would change.

6 Million:

1 to my brother
1 to my parents
1 for this house on the water by a place I fish
2 in the bank
1 to do something positive for someone or something so I don't feel guilty for keeping the rest within my family.

Then take a year or ten off to focus on things that are more important that work.

First thing I would have to do is ....
take a really deep breath,
stick myself with a pin to make sure it wasn't a dream,
call the wife and tell her,
throw the cell phone in the river,
and pay off every debt I had,
as to what I would do after that I couldn't say. I try not to think about what it would be like to be that comfortable, it would just be too depressing to go that deep into a fantasy and not have it become a reality.

Hahaha, it's the only reason we buy tickets. Everytime we buy a ticket we have a long discussion of what we would do with it all! I'm workin my *** off to try to get that comfortable without it. It's just going to take much longer and a lot more hard work! Investing young ftw!

I find it interesting how may lottery winners quit their jobs and end up in bankrupcy court after a few years. There is something to be said for being poor and happy ... like me!

My wife and I would live just the way we are living now. My 40 year old son mentioned that he would like a million, that will not happen, he and my daughter would get a new vehicle of their choice with a ceiling price limit of approx. 40,000.00, the grand kids will be taken care of with any college expenditures. Me and the wife will still take our few trips south, I will fish while she is on the beach. :)

Re: If you won the lottery.....

I would invest enough so that I would draw 150k per year in nothing but interest. I would buy 10 acres all secluded, build a new house for my Mom and Dad, build a house for my to be. So I need to deposit 3 million at .05% interest just to get that. 150K per year around here is a significant amount Sister and build a house for myself and one BIG shop. I am not talking anything overly fancy just 3 nice ranch style houses. I would put my wife through medical school. As for myself I would get lots of hobbies. I would quit working temporarily but 6 million isn't as much as what it used to be. After taxes I would get to keep 90k of it per year to live off of BUT if I have no debt and relatively few expenses then It is easily doable around here. My property taxes on all the houses and property around here would only be around 3k per year. I guess I would take about 600K and buy toys :)

Ohh yeah and I'd also buy target a first class ticket home and pay off his mortgage under the condition he goes fishing with me and buys the beer :) Since home is only a couple hours away from here.

I'd buy a farm & turn it into a place for foster kids & batter women. :)

Then give 10% to my church & 5% to the needy family's in my town. :)

I have all I want or need at this point in my life. :).

Re: If you won the lottery.....

Funny, but I think (dream) about this very thing every time I buy a lottery ticket. So, here's my list:
- pay off mortgage, then have a custom home built on the water, with my private dock
- pay off both cars
- pay for both kids' college education
- buy a new boat, maybe two boats
- set up our retirement accounts, investments, etc
- retire from my job

Since I'm already retired military and collecting a pension, I think I'd be all set......

Re: If you won the lottery.....

I find it interesting how may lottery winners quit their jobs and end up in bankrupcy court after a few years. There is something to be said for being poor and happy ... like me!

Very true. I have the unusual experience of knowing 6 different lotto winners, from $100,000 to about $165 million. As of the last I knew, 3 of them are broke, one attempted suicide, and the other 2 are happy themselves, but have serious family issues. It's definately a strange phenomena!! The guy that won $165 million is the one who failed at suicide, OVER A WOMAN!!

If you do get lucky, my advise is to first sign the back of the ticket and put it in the safe or safe deposit box. TELL NO ONE!! Go to your lawyer and have a trust fund set up, and cash the ticket in the name of the trust fund, otherwise, your real name will be published as the winner. Carry on your life like nothing ever happened, and slowly change things. Myself, I'd even go to the trouble of being fired, and make a huge scene out of it. Don't go buying everything you want right away. When people find out you have all that money, you wouldn't believe the down on their luck, distant cousins, and outright scams that come out of the woodwork. My advice is to never let anybody know, even if it means keeping the family in the dark.

Now, if it were to ever happen to me, and it was enough money, over a 3 year period, I'd set up college funds for each of my nieces and nephews, buy my parents farm and build a house there. Then I'd buy houses (nothing too fancy, just good locations, reasonably close to airports) at Lake Erie, somewhere on the Gulf Coast, and somewhere around Chesapeake Bay. I'd also buy the appropriate trucks, boats, and equipment, as well as clothes, to leave at each location. This way I could just hop on a plane, with no luggage, get a rental car and be fishing later that day. Might as well end up with something in Alaska too, since I'm dreaming!!!
