Re: If you won the lottery.....

I find it interesting how may lottery winners quit their jobs and end up in bankrupcy court after a few years. There is something to be said for being poor and happy ... like me!

I have heard an observation on this very same subject that I agree with totally. The reason that lottery winners (and perhaps professional athletes, and anyone else who comes into a huge sum of money suddenly) very often come to bad ends is that they are not mentally prepared to handle wealth the way, say, an entrepreneur or a business person is. A millionaire who has earned his millions through business risk or other such means has a notion of the value that wealth represents, mostly because they see the wealth grow over time. They realize that there is a progression of risk, effort, and reward that added up to their wealth in the end. Even friends of mine who came into their wealth through inheritance more often than not have a sense of the value of that wealth and (if their parents did a proper job of imparting the lesson of the value of wealth) strive to maintain or grow that wealth. A lottery winner goes from (probably) not wealthy one day to wealthy the next. They have an idea of what they would do if they were wealthy, but probably no notion of how to manage that wealth. It is easy to say "well, I'll put x amount away and live off of the interest", or "I'll donate x amount to charity y", until you are faced with the reality and pressures of having that kind of money. As with anything else in life, mental preparation is key to success.

For the record I never play the lottery. There are too many priorities for my money ahead of spending even a dollar a week on the miniscule chance that I will win. I do thank all of the regular lottery players, though. They have put both my girls through a quality Pre-K program, and will hopefully pay for their college education in about 12 years. To all those lottery players, "Dream Big"

And me too! Poor and happy. I couldn't have this much fun if I quit my job.

Most of the folks in my business are millionaires and multi-millionaires. It is just how it is. We all keep working and many into their 80's as crazy as that sounds. One of my clients is worth more than 100M and he is in his mid 80's working every day of the year. I'd invest the money and wouldn't likely do anything much different. The one thing i'd do is replace my commuter vehicle and finally buy a lake home. As conservative people, we just don't flaunt anything so there's no BMW's in our future. I know this is a pretty boring response to the lottery dream question.

I would pay off student loans first($16 k left) donate to the salvation army 10% pay off house and truck. then get a boat that causes more fun than heartache. kids would go to college (my 14 year old daughter wants to be a pharmacist) wife would never work again. it's 10:30 at night here and she's still got another hour to go at walmart. I do think I would keep working thoug I am an HIV nurse specialist in rural Idaho and my work brings me happiness. i would however take a six month hiatus and see more of the world than the border states.

6 Million:

1 to my brother
1 to my parents
1 for this house on the water by a place I fish
2 in the bank
1 to do something positive for someone or something so I don't feel guilty for keeping the rest within my family.

Then take a year or ten off to focus on things that are more important that work.

You forgot Uncle Sam. Now you have ZERO after brother, parents and "something positive".:(

If I won all that money I would buy a houseboat big enough for me and the wife and our animals and then invest alot of it in gold so when the bottom drops out of the american dollar I would still be rich..I'd also buy a mountain, build a nice cabin and load it with everything I would need to live there for along time if need be.....

pay off my student loans and house and keep the rest for retirement/rainy days
with no housing payment I think I could live pretty well on my salary and just keep the investment.

Since I am vested in my pension, the FIRST thing, I'd do is walk into my bosses office, set down in front of his desk. Put my feet up and say, "I just don't need you anymore !!!"

After that, I have no idea. It'd really scare me to death.
