I have a 1996 Evinrude 90 with a ignition/kill switch combo similar to this. The switch is no longer working and I need to replace it. Can I replace it with another ignition switch and a separate kill switch? If so how difficult would it be? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Ignition/Kill Switch Replacement

Which switch isn't working, the kill switch or the ignition switch. If its the kill switch, just buy a generic O/B kill switch and transfer the wires from the existing switch to the new one. The ignition will work normally. Mount the new kill switch wherever it fits.

Well, it was just the kill switch that didn't work but I took it apart to "fix" it and now neither works.

Re: Ignition/Kill Switch Replacement

As a test, remove the two wires from the kill switch and tie them together. Now try the ignition switch. If it still doesn't work, you have a bad ignition switch, bad wiring between it and the engine, you blew the fuse at the engine, you have a bad solenoid or solenoid wiring, a bad starter. See what you did!!! :) You now need to take a serious troubleshooting approach and not "shotgun" this problem. Don't start replacing parts unless you can prove they are bad. You probably have a "connection problem" not a failed part problem. At this point you haven't even proven the kill switch is bad. Just because it didn't work doesn't mean its bad. Pulling the lanyard and the engine stays running may be as simple as a loose or broken wire. Remember, on an outboard the kill circuit is OPEN for the engine to run. This is opposite for a car engine in an I/O or inboard. A simple ohmmeter test on the switch will verify its good or bad. Open circuit with the lanyard in place, closed circuit with it pulled.

Re: Ignition/Kill Switch Replacement

The ignition worked before I disassembled it but the kill switch did not. I did test the kill switch for continuity but I didn't think about connecting the wires together. I have no way to test it now because the switch is now in pieces. You said I could transfer the wires to the new kill switch. I assume you mean the wires that go to the m's on the ignition switch (black & black/yellow). Is that correct? Do they have to go to the ignition too? Thank you for all your help.
