HI ... I have this 48hp spl evnrude.... The ignition switch worked ok turned the motor on off etc.... kill switch worked tool..... until yesterdayl..... I was checking everything over after impeller change and carb rebuild. It started I sorte out the carbs so that it is running nice. Fired it u a few times and then found I could not turn it off with the key or the kill
switch... Choked it to sort it out.. Came bac to it this morning and same again motor would run but couldnt turn it off ... Stopped the engine checked the wiring and switch all seemed ok.. Started it kill switch still wont work choked it and it stopped.. went to start it again and it wouldnt start. No power at all to the switch and thus nothing to the kill switch. The motor would start if I bypassed the starter Selonoid.... Could a bad seloind be the reason for now power to the ignition switch and malfunctioning kill switch?????

ok one further question..... is there a fuse to the starter ... if so where is it ???

Ok ... I found the a fuse in the junction box which is blown.... I guess thats why the starter turn from the key....
But Now wondering why the key wont turn off the motor and kill switch wont work....?

Start at the power pack and check the black/yellow wire all the way to the key switch for having an open circuit. Also make sure the ground wires are all good.

I have looked at all the earths checked all the wiring and still it wont switch off .... and the kill switch doesnt work... I am at a loss...

Were you using a multi-meter when checking all the wires for continuity ??

Hi Boobie hank you for your continual help...... Ok this is what I have found this am ........ The kill wire has continuity to the aplug in the control box.... the plug on the "engine side is showing no continuity... so this wire heads off to the coil.... I have looked at the wiring diagram... do you know if this lead is permanently attached to the coil or is it plugged in to the coil ? I cannot tel

In the process of working on carbs and whatever else you did, you probably jiggled the big red harness plug thus creating a momentary or open connection. Pull that connector and check the internal contacts, Bet you see an abundance of green in there. Clean things up using contact cleaner and then burnish the contacts as best you can. Insert the plug and remove it repeating the process several times. Bet it begins working again.

Ok tried that and changed to a different multi tester.... this one shows no current along the black yellow to the ignition switch and no current from the ignition pack under the flywheel when motor is running to the plug there...

For a wild guess you may have a broken black/yellow wire on the armature plate under the flywheel. It's been known to happen.

Boobie.... your wild guess led me to the actual problem... I removed the fly wheel and one side of the the power pack/ ignition module shattered and the side that contacts the magnets in the fly wheel was cracked. So I need a new one... I dont know how the motor could actually start and run...

I don't either but put a new pack in and make sure it's aligned with the armature plate and let us know what happens.
