i cant figgure out why the outer slice was not repaired???????

ok....so the slice is from someone cutting out the deck. ....the deck was repaired,,,,possibly a stringer job....but at least a soft spot in the deck was takes care of.

but why didnt the op fix the gash?......doesn't make sense.

if you dig up the deck.....be very mind full to do as little as you can. untill you assertain the condition of the under hull area.
the boat was just done.....so you might be needlesly ripping the deck up.

yeah, i know, oops. IMO it was just a quick patch on the inside and that is why there is resin dripping out. i say that because the last owner had it in the water a few times, and told me there were no leaks he knew of.

i know the deck needs to come up. i have a soft spot in front of the ski locker (between the consoles) with rotten wood (which was completly UNtreated), a few spots in the front storage area that have spots with NO glass (not sure if factory or ****-poor rework), and uneven decking in the back around the doghouse (i tripped on it the first time i got in). then, the bulkheads in front and behind the fuel tank need replacement, too, so im sure the stringers are prolly bad as well. seems the more i look, the more i find. :facepalm: what gets me is the engine is brand new...it has that 'new engine' smell when it warms up (and other signs of less than 15 hours or so on it). so somebody went thru the trouble to put in a new v6, and either NOT care how the stringers/bulkheads turned out, or didnt know any better, or just got tired an got rid of it.....or really didnt know in the first place. being 26 years old, there's really no telling what all this hull's been thru.

thank you GT1M! i rather impressed myself with that, and it was a great learning experience! so, yeah, you're right. i have the experience to fix that gash now.


i'll get a few more pics today (if i get time) of the other problems i've found so far.
the more i try to avoid it and tell myself "...it'll be ok for another season...", the more i find that needs to be fixed.

turns out the uneven 'decking' is glass patch jobs...some have more glass than others.

started grinding.....



pulled back carpet to see what i had, and found this.

in this pic, you can see where i was grinding. 100w work light from outside showing thru hull.


the wood deck doesnt go all the way across. it stops were the cut is, then is glassed over.
the voids seen in the underneath pic are where foam was (kinda) filled before the plywood was put on.
believe it or not, it's dry in there, and the wood is good. couldnt get any good pics of it, tho.
the cut apears to be from removing old deck, and when new deck was glassed in, they just covered the cut.
im guessing they figured since it's below the water line, and under the boat, nobody would see it.

i still have some grinding to do to get to the base of the cut for a solid patch.

what glass should i use when i go back? 1708? csm/cloth?

Ok you need to do the exact same grinding on the inside as you did on the outside. Then a layer same type of patching small to large CSM, 1708, CSM, 1708, CSM, 1708 for the inside patch. Then do the outside.

by grinding out the inside, the 'dark spot' in the pic will be totally removed and become a hole.
then, from the voids in the foam to the 'white line' (which is the original cut) will be mostly gone, also, as that is where the deck is.

dont get me wrong....im no longer scared of holes in fiberglass.
that will make that spot at the voids between 1.5" and 1.75" vertical and 2" to 2.5" horizontal.
wouldnt i need some sort of backing before laying that?

i just wanna verify before doing it.

Yessir, For a small area like that, cardboard or wood with wax paper on it, duct taped to the outside of the hull, or a piece of scrap formica with a smooth shiny face...anything that is strong enough to support the repair and be NON-stick to the resin...

Since you've already ground out a big "dip" from the outside, I think I would just grind enough on the inside to get to good glass and start the build up like Woodonglass mentioned. CSM, 1708, CSM, 1708 and then continue with the outside repair as you normalling wood. Personally I wouldn't grind all the way thru from the inside, just reinforce it good.

Great advice form all , you should make a perfect repair. I used an old throw away cutting board I picked up for fishing trips etc from the dollar store for a buck and taped it to the outside. If you need to follow a line just bend it first

No problem , pictures are easier then explaining. I am in the same vote , I used christmas to buy a couple new tools to get me back at her. My back up heater just arrived yesterday, so have to go pick it up. I have enough supplies to finish the inside and get her flipped, but am not going to do much until after the festive season is my plan but might put a day or 2 in before .
