Re: I'm an owner! 1975 Islander 22

Well I'll give you just a quick update.

I completed the to-do list, splashed her, spent about at hour on the water.

Never left the dock. But I did get her off the trailer this time.

I'll let you guys guess for a little bit, then I'll come back tomorrow and tell you the story.

I'm actually not feeling bad about today either. I made a hell of a lotta progress in the last week or two and I'm still very close even if I'm not quite there yet. Damn if I'm gonna stop now.

If nothing else - not only have I experienced the sensation of standing in my boat as it hovers in the water, I've also seen what my trailer looks like without a boat on it. ;)

Papa - Great to hear you got to test your sea legs - a little. Hope the glitch is just a small one.

That floor looks awesome, I'm going to call you when I need mine done.

Very nice progress PR, way to get after it:D

I'm gonna go ahead and guess that you had some minor shifting issues perhaps?

Hope it was something minor whatever you got going on:)

Bingo - shifting problems. Actually it went into gear just fine. It was getting out of gear and back into neutral that was the problem. Fiddled with shift cable adjustments for an hour before I gave up and pulled the boat out.

This morning I found Don's thread about the shift interrupt switch and it explained everything. The boat shifted into and out of gear beautifully while it was still on the trailer and I was running from a hose, it wasn't until it was in the water (under load) that I couldn't get it out of gear. The shift interrupt switch actually grounds the coil and begins to kill the motor momentarily to take pressure of the clutch dogs so it can easily slip out of gear and into neutral. Makes perfect sense. Either the switch is failing or I didn't connect it correctly - or both. So that's my next project.

But hey, here's a picture that makes me all warm and fuzzy inside:

Jason's getting all the attention these days and I can't stand it, so here's a picture of the new deck with the walls and console in place and you can see a bit of the newly painted cabin too. Course the steering wasn't hooked up yet as you can see, but it is now - I swear.

Hey who doesn't like puppies?

And yeah, haven't even ordered fuel tanks yet. I'm gonna keep the same layout as the newer Islanders, fuel tanks where they were originally under the seats, but then boxes above those for stowage and what-not, then the seats mounted on swivels directly to the boxes.

For now, I have my old red plastic 6-gallon tank hooked directly to the engine.

I'll be heading over again tonight to fiddle with some adjustments to the throttle (it's idling too high) and test the shift interrupt switch operation first actually connecting it (D'OH!) then running the motor and pushing the switch manually to make sure it kills the motor. Then I should be good to get 'er up on a plane and take a couple laps around the lake as I wipe tears of joy from my eyes.

Last night the kids and I were browsing iboats for towables - dang those things aren't cheap!

Where do ya go? Would be fun to bring my SC and have our own little SC party like the guys down in PA! I don't want to cramp in on your party though! Friggin awesome papa!

The boat lives in a backyard up by Bass Lake in Plymouth but the ramp is way to shallow on that lake to launch this boat, so I pull it a couple miles west to Fish Lake (right off Bass Lake Road).

We should definitely have a Twin Cities Starmada get together! I know there's at least three of us -did Losdinspace get his lower unit fixed yet? We got about two months before I have to winterize this old lady again, let's get something planned!

I'm game when I get the chance to repaint the lower unit. The shift rod was out and the shop needed some heat to remove it and wrecked all my paint.

I want to go on Bass but there is no public access unless you can get us on. Fish is always good for me but if you want to fish there are too many jet skiers.

You got a BassPro? They usually have a couple nice models in a pile near the boats that are great prices. I got my big one for like $70 I think.

So your boat is functional? Let's plan a date!

I'll PM you about Bass Lake - I'm pretty protective of that little gem. Shhh....

No BassPro, but we got Cabelas! I'll be checkin Fleet Farm first if they haven't pulled 'em off the shelves already.

Saw towables on clearance at MC Sports and Gander Mountian last week. Sam's may have them too.

You might have to bring a co-captain, just in case the tears get out of control. Hate to see an accident.

Oh for sure! Co-captain is the guy standing in the boat in that picture above. He's Russian - never shed a tear in his life. Though I appear to have caught him mid-blink.

Re: I'm an owner! 1975 Islander 22

Last night I brought the kids to the boat and had the boy load the prop (hold it) while the girl shifted into and out of gear. The shift interrupt mechanism did exactly as it should - the little roller switch closed when coming out of either gear. Okay so the mechanical parts works.

I got to the boat tonight, laptop in hand with the wiring diagram loaded up on screen, spool of 12g. wire, waterproof connectors, crimper, pliers, side cutters, volt/ohm meter, the whole nine yards.

And there was the brown wire coming outta the harness right next to the terminal where it should have been connected. I could see the other end of the brown wire screwed to the negative terminal on the coil. Tested continuity on the wire to make sure it was the same wire at both ends, it was. All I had to do was remove the screw from the switch terminal, put the connector over the screw and replace the screw.

Ran the motor on the hose, pushed the switch momentarily and the motor started to die - just like it's supposed to. I could have fixed this problem in thirty seconds while the boat was in the water last weekend.

Did I tell you I do wiring for a living?

Ah well.... I didn't even know about shift interrupt switches last weekend. Let this be a lesson to you I/O owners - do not neglect the shift interrupt switch when you hook up your motors!

Start the countdown till EZ comes in here with some comment about outboards....

Very impressive project. Start to finish, well pretty much. If only other boat restoration threads were this engaging and informative.

Excellent work, Roof.

-Your boating bud. Way boat. Here Boat.

P.S. Sorry for bastardizing the thread as a newbie. I'm just so excited and impressed by this.
