Awesome boat. That definately was a deal you've got there.

At least no one started tearing the engine down and left a box of mismatched parts. With any luck he can get you back on the water quick.

what a deal!
Learn something new every day.
was looking at the pics of your motor and seen a good idea, i thought
when i was putting my motor together how much of a pain it would be
if the belt broke out on the water, putting a extra under the mount
as a backup is a good idea..

I used to carry a lot of tools and spare parts in my old '76 Wellcraft with the 888 MerCruiser (Ford 302), and after crossing a buddy's wake too hard (and causing a belt to snap) I was thankful to have them on board. Got out the tools, installed the belt, and we were off again. Sometimes a little paranoia pays off! :D

Yeah I was impressed by that too. Took me a while to figure out what the h*** was going on, but when it finally sunk in....

No phone call from the motor guy today. Oh why did I tell him not to rush?

Rebuild that motor if at all possible. Buying a used motor is a crap shoot. See what it will cost to get yours fixed. A rebuilt motor will be a nice safe feeling when you get out on Superior.

3 nights without a call on my baby. And assuming he doesn't work weekends it'll be three more....

Did find a very similar situation from a couple years ago with a lot of good ideas and information:
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=283285

Makes my situation sound hopeful too. Seems soaking the piston rings free can take some time.

Well, I lived forty years without this boat, I can make it a few more days, maybe even a week (ugh).

Nice! I have one of these too (1976). You'll like the ride. I used to have a 20' Wellcraft. Comparing the two, I think the islander rides more comfortably in a chop. I wasn't expecting that. The wellcraft has a classic battleship bow on it and really throws the water to the side, but something about the islander feels a lot smoother. Maybe sitting nearly in the middle of the boat makes a difference. maybe being 1,000 lbs lighter has something to do with it too.

The 3L 4cyl in my holiday had water in the rear cyl and i could have gotten
away with just a hone and new piston, the pitting wasnt all that bad
but nothing i hate more than an oil burner, so it was all new 2nd over
pistons and rings.
runs 100% and no oil burning:)
Its nice to know i have a motor if taken care of will last another 30 years.lol
it was amazing that the wear in my motor couldnt be measured, kind of sad
it had to be bored all because someone let it fill with water.

Picked this up for $5 at a garage sale this weekend. Think this would be tempting fate to mount this on the Islander?

Geeze I guess I tempted fate by even suggesting that I put that thing in the boat.

The motor guy just called and said the motor is so locked up with rust it's not worth fixing, and he's got me a "great deal" on a complete, fresh, rebuilt long block for $3500 installed.

Tell me there's a cheaper way....

That sounds high. I had a Jasper 350 put in my truck for that same $3500. Boat should be cheaper. Check rapido marine.

Re: I'm an owner! 1975 Islander 22

I dunno. That might be about right. $2500 for a new motor, $1000 to put it in. I am sure the numbers could be fudged some a little cheaper. But maybe not by much. The good news going this route is you have a great new motor, warranty (right?), and should be in great shape for years to come.

If you go clist, or donor boat, or the like, you are definitely gambling. Might pay off, might not. I picked up a donor, chopped it up, sold the rigging, sold the trailer and now have hardly anything into the entire V6 Alpha drive line. Will it pay off?? Gosh I sure hope so, and think it will, but, it may not. I feel like I made a safe bet but I could be wrong. I won't be out that much (if any) if I lose though.

I am thinking you can be creative and maybe bring that number down a bit. Keep working at it man!!! I still think you have done great considering what you have paid for her:D

Keep on it!

Oh that sucks. Sorry for your loss paparoof.

Donor boat is a cheaper way. Jasoutside worked it out to where he got a donor for cheap. This means you'll have to install it yourself though, or pay someone depending on how you feel about it.

I don't know about you but $3500 is real money to me. Think about it for a while and get some advice from the Tin Nation before making a decision.

Jasoutside start the Vulcan Mind Melt. We need a solution here.

Yeah, I don't have the "stout trees" that Jas has in his yard. I don't have a way to lift motors in and out of the boat. The "alignment" thing worries me too.

Let's not forget about the green seeping fluid from the lower unit, I might need to spend a gazillion dollars getting a working lower unit.

Then I see this:

I feel like I need to be creative about this thing.

Damn I wish you were closer I LOVE pulling motors. My bro has a cherry picker, 4 engine stands, 5 small block chevies, two Trans Ams, 4 kids and no wife. Recent divorce.

My garage takes the overflow, 2 Ford 9" rearends, 1 700R4. Only 1 child and a wife to keep me in check! Plus the all important Starcraft.

Damn I wish you were closer. My 6 year old even loves pulling motors.
