It'd also leave the transom 'intact', kind of, if ever you or next owner wanted to go back to IO.

To convert it back, all the excess holes could be covered w/ bedliner, it sticks REALLY REALLY well to aluminum boat hulls:facepalm:

BTW: The bedliner ^^ is NOT a good idea, been there, survived its removal......

my 2 pesos' worth: look at options 3 and 4. 4 would be the home-built alum pod which displaces enough water to offset weight of motor. very simple fabrication project and you could weld it up yourself with a spool gun for your MIG. or get a quote on just the TIG work if you did the cut and fit of the alum sheets (the time consuming part).

my thinking is based on idea that i hate to cut down that nice high I/O transom......i've had some days out fishing where i was taking water over the stern from a following sea.....makes me nervous, and the I/O transom eliminates that.

I like the idea, kinda been leaning that way all along, just not sure it will be worth the expense. Following seas won't be a problem for me, the biggest thing this boat would see is a barge wake if we go play on the Ohio.

What do you mean "next owner" keeping this boat the rest of my life. I doubt anyone will want to stick a OMC sterndrive back in her down the road. Another plus to the pod and tall transom would be to hopefully cut down on noise, also the reason I like I/O's. When I told the admiral that I was going to hang a OB on the back, I got the look, and she started complaining about how loud it was gonna be.

I feel for you on the bedliner goo, been watching your progress. I will admit bedliner has been thought of for use on this boat but not for a hull coating.

I surely meant your kid's kids might want to go back to I/O but never OMC It'd probably be a hydro-dynamic caterpillar jet drive and the inside face of the tall transom is required to provide adequate space for the flux capacitor to get mounted

A panther attacked my boat and tattooed pictures of himself every where.



Feels good to finally put something back in the boat, the foam is to help support my ski locker floor, The wooden motor mounts are put back in as well, I figured I use them to build a bombproof knee brace of off. Since the boat is still outside and the slightly warm weather we are having, work on the hull stops as soon as the sun reaches it.

I also broke down and did some Ebay shopping last week

Front 2 deck sheets in



Transom holes drilled, then I pulled it back out, over drilled the holes, and am putting another coat of spar on each side.



reinforcement on third sheet done, just needs one more coat on the topside

Good looking deck work. That ski locker lid will clean up & look great too. There's a few YouTube videos about prepping, epoxy & spar varnish on Teak for boats. Epoxy to seal, spar for the UV protection.

Cutting some more flotation to go in besides the red noodles? Looks like it's got plenty of room for more. Like horsepower, more flotation is better, much, much better:facepalm:

The teak is about done, I just cleaned, oiled, and am sealing it with spar varnish.

There are 24 noodles under the front plus some sheet foam. The two reds one are just ones I didn't trim and stick out the back. It took about 240lbs :facepalm: to compress the foam enough to rivet the deck on.

The way I hear it, Procter & Gamble are considering a marine flotation division.:facepalm: It'll be based in Midland, MI, rapid prototyping & testing have been delayed by a SeaNymph speed build

3rd deck sheet down, ski locker set in.



I put the last coat of spar on the stern deck sheet tonight, so hopefully I will get it and the transom in tomorrow.

Also wondering if anyone knows where to find the fuel filler surround. I have looked on the boating sites with no luck, I still need to check some truck upfitter sites.

on my starchief (same 18' I/O hull as yours), the fuel filler is just punched through the flat surface across the top of stern area....no surround needed. where is your tank and what is old surround made of?

Tank is at the stern, port side. It came with a 11 gal plastic tank that is not factory and didn't fit very well. There is a good chance I will go with portable tanks if I end up using a 2 stroke outboard, I should be able to fit 4 6 gallon tanks across the back and spread the weight out. The surround is plastic and fills the hole in the top left of this pic, so if I don't use it I need to come up with a nice looking patch.

Took all day to get the last deck sheet in, between raining every time I got the tools out, and drilling the rivets back out so i could move the sheet over 1/2". Then had an eye appointment so tried to work on it with my eyes still dilated. Any way happy with it now, I am gonna clean up shop tomorrow and tuck the boat back in the barn for a while. I have some other projects to do and the outboard to tinker with.
