Re: I'm sick of hearing overused cliche phrases . . .

Well Expedia guess this says something to my respect to your opinion. I went back and edited my post (I was thinking, "crap wonder if I've written that before?"...doubt it, because I can't stand it right?).....now, after a little Googleing....I'm going to go back and edit again, it is "ado".

Thanks Keywest.

You were correct the first time. I was wrong. I love Google. Can answer anything in seconds . . . .

From Plaidophile.com
Posted by Fuffy:
It's "Without further ado," not "without further adieu."
"Ado" means "fuss" or "delay." "Adieu" is not a noun but a complete statement which simply means "goodbye."
Why have I been seeing "without further adieu" on weblogs so often lately? It's stupid and wrong and makes no sense in any way! (Unless you're trying to cut a goodbye short.)

Re: I'm sick of hearing overused cliche phrases . . .

My English language pet peeve isn't a phrase...or even a word...it's a punctuation mark.

'

Yup, that one. See it up there? It's an apostrophe. Like the one I used in the first word of the last sentence.

It is not something you wedge between a word and the s that makes that word plural but you'd (hey - there it is again!) be amazed at how often it get stuck there.

As in, "Me and my buddy just winterized our IO's..."

It isn't something to stick between a year and an s to indicate a number of years all put together.

As in, "Man, I sure miss the 1980's...."

So, to be clear :)D) the apostrophe is used:

> To indicate posession. As in, "Honest, officer, that there is my buddy's weed..."

(unless using "its" in the possessive - then no apostrophe. As in, "Yeah, mixing that fuel with ethanol really shortens its shelf life...")

>To indicate a contraction. As in, "No, sir - I didn't have any idea it was in the glove box next to my unregistered firearm..."

I am generally disincented to audibly acquire techno-speak, because it offends my refined perception of simplicity, in oral communication.

In other words ... shut the &%$# up and speak english!

Well, I am perpetually annoyed by the misuse of first person pronouns.

"Me and my buddy", for example, is incorrect in two ways:

1.) Self is always mentioned LAST, not first.

2.) Identification of self, in these cases, is "I", not "me".

So what too often reads, "Me and my buddy went to the party." should read, "My buddy and I went to the party."

Just think whether you would say/write, "Me went to the party".

Well, which is it?
"shut the &%$# up" or "speak english!"

Brings me to my favorite peeve. The use of the word "and" instead of "to".

The crew will try and make the repairs.

I'm amazed at how many of the errors are in everyday usage by the "professional" news writers.

... having to press #1 for English....

That one makes me mad. I go to my LOCALLY owned bank, and have to press three extra buttons to get past where it asks (in English) "English? Francais?" THAT makes me nuts too!

True, I am less than two hours from Montreal, but I am still in the US and I have yet to meet a Montrealer in the US who can't speak English. I know of NO local people who speak french instead of English... Who are they trying to serve anyway? Local people? Or French people? We get Canadians traveling to Stowe here... but we don't really have drive through French tourists... something about the big puddle.

My other pet peeve? As a small contractor, I often place a short classified ad in the local newspaper. And I word mine to differentiate myself from others. I can't stand it when I read ads that say, "10-years experience." What, you can't write "10 years of experience?"

and one guy at work, always starts a sentence with "So...."

So WHAT???? Is this a continuation to a recurring/current subject or conversation???
Arghhhh.....

Yeah, and what about the people who end statements with "So" like, "I have no idea what I am doing, so?"

So what?? Finish your statement!

And the guys who end their questions with "Or". I hate this one! "Are you planning on going to the bar after work, or?"

Or what?? Or not? Finish the question.

Re: I'm sick of hearing overused cliche phrases . . .

Texting type spelling and Ebonics. I understand the reason behind the abbreviated text type but it still irks me. It is lazy and slothful. Most people who use text spelling don't limit it to just texting. I believe it is eroding the ability of a great many people to spell and write properly. My own children write this way even when writing a note on paper. I have a cell phone (to use the texting feature because I am deaf) and when I send a text I be sure to spell correctly. We all miss one now and then but I at least like to make the effort and I like to see others do the same. I asked my daughter once why she used such lazy and slothful spelling in her texts. Her answer was "it saves time". At the time she was lying on the couch reading a book while listening to her mp3 player and texting friends. I then asked why she was in a hurry? No good answer. The most upsetting example of this has been some of the side notes her teachers place on her homework papers. Yep, same lazy text spelling. What is sad is my daughter is an English Honors 3 student! I'm glad most of my teachers from my school days are passed on now. They would probably "fan my hind end" for not intervening in this atrocity more than what I have.

People who say "I seen that" and people who say "I brought it" when they mean "bought".

I hate the word SICK to describe something they like
and "Basically" to describe what they are doing

Oh yeah, I forgot this one! Count me in! I correct my wife on this one, ALL THE TIME.
So in that vein,

"Planning on going" chaps my arse! And it seems that "everyone" thinks that it is perfectly acceptable!

Just got reminded of another one that kills me. "Think tank" I hate it when people (usually the media) use that term. Maybe it's the two words that end in "k". Dunno.

iboats members are always "picking up" items, sometimes as big and heavy as a Crew Cab Dually or a 28' cruiser.

That is entirely too vague. Did you purchase, buy, rent, lease, steal or merely take possession of whatever??? Even more important, what are you going to do about that hernia??

"Think Tank" translation - a group of indivudals, financed by a group of people or an enity with a specific political agenda, who need a cover organization to invent studies with foregone conclusions, in support of said polticial agenda.

What's wrong with that?

My dad was the best janitor St. Cloud, MN ever saw. He worked at a great old granite post office with windows about 16 feet high. When he went up the ladder, he had everything he needed and organized. When he got to the bottom about 3 minutes later, it was sparkling and done. He never broke a sweat.

The young bucks that thought they could outwork him would go up and down multiple times, leave streaks, and take about a half hour a window. They worked much harder, and got less work done.

I have noticed that if I try to help some young men that are doing things the hard way by showing them a smarter way, they get mad. I wonder why.

Re: I'm sick of hearing overused cliche phrases . . .

Work smarter, not harder was always said by a supervisor who had no idea what the heck was going on.

The bosses decided that I had too many techs on third shift at 11:pM so they reduced labor hours. That cut my help from two techs to one tech. My supervisor actually walked in while we're getting slammed and said, "Why are you working so hard?" Keep in mind that I am a Pharmacist. We have 7 phones, 5 computer terminals, 4 cash registers, and a drive-thru window with a 5th register. Patients are lined up 5 deep inside the store in front of each separate register. Each and every phone is ringing off the hook. Cars are six deep at the drive-thru and I'm trying to wait on fifteen patients at the same time with just me and one tech.

I replied, "Well, you smart people at the front office thought that we didn't need 2 techs. How smart do you think you are now?" Tech hours got increased the next night and we were better able to satisfy our customer's needs.

I am always willing to reduce my "work" and perform my duties in a "smarter" method but "Work smarter, not harder" always stuck in my throat when it was uttered my someone that had no clue as to what was actually happening.

That's the primary subject of this thread. Throwing around cliches instead of doing, or even thinking something productive.

I can see where you're coming from. Been there, done that:eek:
