Nice boat! I paid $600 for my 66 Holiday 4-5 years ago. But, mine was an I/O. My preference. I think yours is in better shape than mine was. I rebuilt the motor ($1600.00) so you are ahead of the game already if your motor is tite. How mine turned out.

Dang! That's a nice looking boat.
So many excellent restores on this site. I'm reading and reading, head is spinning with ideas. Summer is slipping away so I think getting it in the water by spring is more realistic.
Getting boat envy from this site and I keep looking at CL for other larger classic Scrafts.. I need to walk it off.. and focus on what I have.
Biggest problem is I should devote most of my free time on finishing off my basement since we would like to sell the home soon..
I'm thinking about cloning myself. but then my other self would be having all the fun.. dang it..

I have been curious if this motor is any good since it was rough with the muffs on. It would also help me mentally knowing that it works while I attempt to "semi-restore" the boat. Knowing I don't have to come up with $2K for an engine would be comforting. Main goal is to have a solid safe boat to take out fishing.
This being my first boat, today was my first boat launch. Went solo and had no hick-ups, but was a little stressful.
After a few trys with the key and choke, it was finally idling and chilling in the Murray Lake.

Got the rpm's up slowly and soon it was whistling Dixie like no one. Ran smooth and fast, I was grinning ear to ear, so happy :), and I'm sure the tin can was grinning too. Taking off quick with no seat almost put me on my a.. heh

See my bilge pump? the 5 gal pail. Fear hit me while in the middle of the lake. Thoughts of me taking on water and desperately dumping water overboard while it sinks, made me take a turn back to the dock.

All is good and this thread should now read "I bought this boat for $800 bucks and I'm a happy Sailor!"

ok, and one lame narrow video..

I bought this boat for $800 bucks and I'm a happy Sailor!

Outstanding, now get back to the dry dock & tear into her some more so I feel better about my $250 purchase:rolleyes:

Looks & sounds like it ran like a champ. W/out a seat it probably felt like 50+ mph:)

Ok, my redneck fun is over and it's back to the dry dock. for now...
I did notice a little water coming in through the center seam on the bow. I want to put Gluvit down over the weekend. The hull looks really clean for the most part. some pitted rust near the stern though. Seems like there are 10 ways to skin a cat, what steps would you recommend prior to Gluvit? I'm thinking:

-Power Wash it
-lightly grind the rust spots,
-scrub with an acid wash (looks like there are a few acids to choose from, any you recommend?)
-rinse with power washer
-coat corroded spots with Zinc Chromate
-hit it with Gluvit

missing anything?
thanks!

If you need to fill in some corrosion spots, hit them w/ a brass wheel, or similar (Not steel) to clean them up. use JB Weld or similar. Once you've water tested the hull & re-bucked any leaking rivets, use a 50/50 Distilled White Vinegar & water wash, clean water rinse, & fully dry. Then coat the seams & rivets on the interior w/ Gluvit. It takes a long time to fully cure, measured in days not hours. Then just hit any bare aluminum spots w/ Zinc Chromate.

You want the Gluvit to be able to fully enclose, encapsulate & penetrate in, around, and under all the rivets & seams. Using the ZC 1st will probably prevent that. Some have rolled their boat onto it's side to allow gravity to work in their favor to aid the Gluvit settling into all those nooks, cranny's, seams & cavities. Then once it starts to set up roll it the other way & continue applying the Gluvit.

I think that covers it.

And here I thought your bilge pump was a seat that went flying.

Glad to see the motor runs good and you had a good trial run.

Yes, knowing it runs strong and being able to experience a short boat trip was the motivator I was looking for.
So time to dig in.. sucks winter is around the corner.. but of course where there's ice, there's me and the Vexlar pullen perch.
win win : )

Will post some pic's when things start moving along.

On a different note, what bilge pump would you recommend? I would pay a little more on a quality one if you think it's worth it.
(the 5 gal pail had a great gph rating though)

Thanks JBCurt on the hull sealing feedback!

I don't have a brand to recommend for a bilge pump. But I do think two pumps are better than one. A pump that is switched by you and an automatic pump. Both should be high capacity - 800 gph or more. And I hope you never need them after the Gluvit, etc.

Rule, Johnson and Attwood are a few dependable bilge pump makers that come to mind......cant go wrong with any one of those.

Re: Im thinking about buying this 1967 Starcraft, priced right?

Thanks for the bilge feedback, and yes, hopefully it will not be needed much.

Before I can get my floor down, I have been wondering about which fuel tank to buy and where to put it.
Being an 18 ft Holiday V hull, starting fresh, would the best location be in the bow?
I like the idea of having more weight up there. Anyone know what size and shape tank to use? would like it to be under the floor but not 100% sold on that if there are other reasons to keep it above.
Also, putting the tank near the stern is ok if running it to the bow is not the best..

I have little info on tanks, so if you have a good thread I should read send her to me.
The boat came with just a 6 gal red plastic container, rubber hose and hand primer.

Moving to a larger tank, would a hand primer still be used?
The Mercury70 hp runs nice, what size tank would be best on this 18 footer?
I read polyethylene tanks are preferred over metal, so that's what I should look for?
Thanks again,

Sip

Re: Im thinking about buying this 1967 Starcraft, priced right?

Im working on pulling out the transom. Looks like I need to remove the splash guard to get to some nuts. I drilled out rivets running vertical on both sides and wonder if I need to remove the horizontal rubber molding. are there rivets under that or will the side just slide down?

splash well.jpg

There are a few rivets on the front side of this a drill cannot get to.

Any other sugg on getting the SWell out is much appreciated!
