impeller change-stuck in gear

I see this is a common problem , I've probably had the foot off and on 8 seperate times. I've tried turning the shift shaft clockwise as far as it will go and put everything back on while turning the prop counter-clockwise. but still when I get everything back together I put it in neutral and start it up and it engages in forward , if i push the throttle either way forward or reverse , it just revs in forward either way. Any advise?

Did you change the oil also? Did you take out the Philips screw in the lower gear case? when you have the lower unit off can you shift with the rod by hand? I Dont understand exactly what is wrong but sounds like somethings out of line. Lower gear case is very simple.

No , I didn't change the oil , should I have? I see a flat head screw on the casing but no I didn't remove it. Shes idling pretty high on startup. I would hardly call it idling. also I can move the shift shaft by hand very easily. Any ideas?

Should there be a washer on the lower shift shaft?

ok when the lower unis is of it shift from neutral to go and revers so that's fine.
When the lower unit is off can u shift the upper shifter by had? of with the throttle, shifter?
You have to have the throttle all the way down to shift so make sure its not stuck or anything. Maybe the pin broke in the lower unit and you need to take the bottom cap off and look their.

Re: impeller change-stuck in gear

Im about to take the foot off again and see what I can do. Would not having any gear oil cause it to idle high and not change gears? Should there be a washer on the lower shift shaft?

Well now that you say its ideling high it makes me think the throtle is not all the way down so it wont shift. I would look into that.

Re: impeller change-stuck in gear

i have the shift shaft turn all the way clockwise and the lower unit is stuck about an inch from reconnection , I've turned the prop slightly counter clockwise for almost an hour , the thing is giving me hell , It seems like the only way i can get the unit to mate back up is to take it out of forward gear. Any advice would be very helpful , thanks guys

Ok its not stuck in gear anymore but now when in neutral the prop doesn't spin at all. Before it would spin slowly while in neutral. Whats the problem? Anything serious? Or should I just be glad It's not stuck in forward anymore.

Re: impeller change-stuck in gear

There is a lot of free play in the shift shaft when in Fwd gear, but as Paul stated, there's only a bit of motion when you're actually shifting from one gear to the other.

Rotate the shaft CCW until you get some resistance, the next "notch" is Neutral. You can either rotate the prop or driveshaft to figure out where you're at, and usually it helps when you're shifting to do so.

G'luck........ed

I thought that the shift shaft was moving from fwd to rev but actually it was in forward the whole time ,thats why when I tried to turn the prop it was constantly clicking no matter where the shift shaft was. I just took a rag and some pliars and moved it ccw to the next notch.
