Impeller help

In this picture the old impeller is in the housing, not in horrible shape, on the side is the new impeller which burned up within minutes of running at the lake.

I have a 1991 Evinrude 30 hp ( 30REIC )

From what I can find online the fin direction seems to be correct, however what I noticed is that as the fins turn the catch on the metal edge around the impeller when turned this way.

On the impeller by itself, looking closely the fins closest to you are clearly cracked and pulled back as if snagging on that lip, also upon starting the motor before it burned every once in a while it felt as if the motor had a momentary snag, very light which I think was the impeller snagging and dragging.

Just wanting to check the correct direction before putting in a new one.

Thank you

Re: Impeller help

I can't see well enough in the picture, but I can tell you that the impeller turns clockwise (looking down at it from the top), or counter-clockwise looking up at it from the bottom, and the blades trail back, not stick out ahead.

I totally don't believe anybody would be sharp enough to feel them catching while running.

Re: Impeller help

Even if you rotated the impeller housing the wrong way during install, the fins should have flipped during start up. If it burned up that quickly, I would think it must have been running dry. Any restrictions in the intake area? I assume you remembered the key right? Did you change housing and plate, or just impeller?

Re: Impeller help

Looks like lack of water, and possibly assembly problems.

Look at picture and make sure the two metal tabs on part 61 insert into the water pump housing properly. Also plate number 82 must have that slot in that shown position for the pump to work right. The key must be put into the impeller from the bottom side and the impeller slid down.

Use dish soap or motor oil on the impeller when you install a new one.

While you have the lower unit off, tape a garden hose to the copper water tube that goes to the power head, and make sure it gets flow through the tell tale.... Hope this helps

I did not change the housing as its not in bad shape, I made sure all the passages were clear of anything, it was in the lake and for the first few minutes water coming out of the pee hole perfectly, then just stopped.
I did put a new key in from the kit

Re: Impeller help

IF you have perfect flow through the cooling circuit, and IF the waterpump was installed correctly, it IS possible that brand new impellers fail, it has happened before, but is pretty rare. Was it OEM impeller? There were no grooves at all in the impeller housing or on the impeller plate?

A close up of the housing would help to see if we can see anything wrong.

Before re installing, be sure the housing and impeller are installed correctly, be sure the rubber grommet on top of the housing is not getting pinched by the copper water line when you raise the lu up, and I would flush and backflush the cooling circuit to ensure proper water flow. Also ensure the water intake area is free of debris.

Re: Impeller help

I will try the oil in the housing next, I am going to pickup a new housing this time, jsut to make sure. So the fin direction is my main concern. I appreciate it yall

It was an OEM impeller, purchased the same day was just testing it actually, wasnt fishing or anything. Wanted to test it on moving water rather than just with muffs

Re: Impeller help

Cofe looking at it I think that part 61 may not be seated correctly causing the issue with tearing the fins, just gonna replace the whole housing. I got this motor recently from someone and didnt ever think to check that also.

Impeller update

Impeller update

So I went ahead and replaced the entire water pump housing, actually followed the instruction to the "T" on the seals, grease direction of fins, checked the passage in the lower unit, no blockage found preventing water from getting to the impeller. I made sure the tube leading up from the housing was placed correctly, took it to the lake and started it.
No pee out of the hole, only ran it for about 15 seconds, because previously it would have pee immediately and to avoid burning a new impeller I just shut it off. I also checked the pee hole tub for blockage...nothing and the nipple is fine.

Was wonder since when the impeller burned apparently from being run dry before while in the lake could the thermostat have been damaged and
was reading online, is it possible a bad thermostat could prevent the water from reaching the pee hole.

I also removed the side exhaust cover, which has the nipple and hose it pees from to check for blockage, did not find and, poured water down the it and it drained out the bottom of the motor where it should.

Any ideas are appreciated

Re: Impeller help

I'm willing to bet on your last attempt you did not get the water tube and the grommet lined up correctly. Question, When you reinstall the lower unit does it go all the way home (two mating surfaces make contact) by pushing it together or to you have to bring them together with the bolts? Just wondering. Rick.

Re: Impeller help

No I didnt do that in the video, for sure am going to do it though, was also gonna run a hose to the bottom of the water tube and see what happens and check the thermostat. I am just suprised with a brand new water pump that nothing came out of the pee hole. Even went to the lake for best conditions.
I go to lake whitney for fishing tonight will do those checks on sunday and let yall know how they go.
Didnt put anymore pics cuz the stuff is all new now, no point in posting them of the old housing I threw away.

Re: Impeller help

Appreciate everyones help here, got it working heres what I did
to make sure I didnt have a clogh somewhere, I removed the water jacket on the side and took the lower end off, ran pressure water through the whole thing forward and backwards, through the tube, pee tube. All clear now. I did the barrel test without the barrell used pressure water and a drill instead after putting water pump back together, worked good.
I think the water tube was pinched noticed that when I took it apart. So this time with a little oil I guided it in real careful using fishing line to help guide it in. I took the fishing line out.
Turned it on, realized water doesnt come out the pee hole till about 10-15 seconds on, so my last test may not have been long enough anyway. But alls good now.
Appreciate it yall
