Thanks

Re: Impeller replacement

hmm, I've seen that diagram before. My unit had another o-ring type thing with a spring wrapped around it and I figured that is what it was talking about. I guess I now have a different extra part

That is probably the oil seal that is on the impeller base plate. Your first post is the centrifugal slinger. Goes on top of the impeller housing. A basic impeller kit comes with a new slinger, but not a new base plate/oil seal

This is the other one that was originally there. It was actually about halfway down the shaft; I just figured it wasn't pushed down all the way. There was an o-ring in the groove that I replaced.

Re: Impeller replacement

Since it was halfway down the shaft and there isn't anything that is supposed to be there is it going to do any harm if I choose not to put it back on?

That seal goes in the upper gear box around the gears vertical shaft. You really need to fix that seal and you probably have water in your gear lube.

There wasn't any water in the oil when I drained it so hopefully I'm good there. I guess I'll get to finding instructions for fixing that. Thanks for your help.

He said he replaced the O-ring on the shaft....I am passing along the lesson learned from AChris....

The picture he posted (and you quoted) is not of that oring, it's the inner portion of a seal. You can see the garter spring still around it.

Thanks for the help and the manual. It's a lot better than the Seloc one I have. :) It looks like I can pull the seal out and tap a new one in without completely taking the upper drive apart like the manual says. Would you suggest not doing this or will I be ok?

Re: Impeller replacement

You don't have all the old seal out of the housing yet. Getting the old (metal) piece out without damaging the housing is going to be the trick. No, I have never tried it your way, probably wouldn't. But let us know how it works for you.

He will probably see what your talking about when he sees a new seal.

Re: Impeller replacement

Sorry if I wasn't clear, I knew I didn't have the old seal out. I was able to pop the metal ring from the old seal out using a small pry bar going thru the opening for the exhaust. I was very careful and didn’t damage the housing. It seemed fairly easy to do with the upper off the boat. I figured the seal was bad it wouldn’t hurt if it got bent a little. I really didn’t want to mess with the shims so it was worth a try. Thanks again for all of your help.
