well, to make a long story short, i noticed mhy engine wasnt exhuasting any water, so i ordered a water pump kit, and replaced the the whole water pump assembly. the problem is, the old housing is worn, but the impellor didnt look too bad.. how bad does it have to be before it starts not pumping water? i am new to this, but just looking at it, it didnt look too worn out? i am goin to water test it in a little bit, but i am kinda wondering if there isnt something else wrong, i will keep you posted on the water test

jason

Hi Jason: You didn't say what kind of motor you have. Now that you have replaced your water pump, you should also replace your thermostat(s) as they can also be the reason your engine wasn't pumping water. If your engine is used in salt water, there could be corrosion plugging up your cooling system as well. When you pull the T-stats check for corrosion and/or foreign material in the water passages. Good luck!

Re: impellor question

Forgot to mention if you are observing water flow via a tell-tale (pee stream) the small opening in the outlet can easily become plugged up. Make sure the opening in the tell-tale and the tube leading to it are unplugged and free-flowing, otherwise it may look like your motor isn't pumping when it really is.

J- if after you have it out,the blades stay curved-then it's due for an impeller...or if they're inflexible or you can see surface cracking-you're due...check the wear cup in the housing-if it has grooves or rust replace it

Re: impellor question

well, i took it out, and with the new pump, it is pumping good. it is a 87 force 50hp, and the impellor does stay curved some even after removing it, but seemed to be making a seal, but it wasnt working, and the new one is, so i am assuming that was it. I am glad i bought the water pump kit though rather then just a impellor, because the only real wear i saw, was on the upper housing, it seemed to be very wore, and i am guessing that was were it was failing. in either case , the new pump seems to have fixed it. i had it out for a hour or so this evening, and had no trouble. thank for all the help guys...

Re: impellor question

Check the old impeller where the metal hub comes in contact with the rubber. On mine it looks like a metal stop sign (octagon) glued to the rubber. On my chrysler the glue joint went out and even though the metal part of the impeller was spinning because it was locked to the drive shaft it was slipping and the rubber would not spin. Because the rubber would not spin no water was getting out the top.

Re: impellor question

The impellor on this outboard is one piece rubber, so it had to of been turning. and like i said, it fit very snugly in the housing, just as the new one in the new housing, were it was worn was in the inside top of the housing(where the whole impellor rubs the housing. All i do know for sure is, it wasn't pumping, and now, eith the new pump installed, it is. so it must have been bad, however, me being a novice looking at it, i couldnt tell why. my only conclusion is that the housing was worn enough to cause it not to seal well on the bottom plate and housing.

Is it normal for the water pump bottom plate to have scarred the driveshaft from normal use? it all went togethor fine, but i did notice a scar that goes all around the shaft in a line no bigger then a 1/16th of a inch right were the shaft goes through that plate.

and as for the rubber seal that the drivesaft goes through directly under the water pump lower plate, it wasnt cracked or damaged that i could tell, but it was fairly dirty all around it, do i ever need to replace that seal, and is it very difficult?

thanks
jason

Re: impellor question

The scaring on from the water pump plate could be from the plate not being centered when it was installed or it was installed incorrectly at one time. I am guessing if it was off center enough to come in contact with the drive shaft it could have scored it. Not knowing what motor you have the upper seal on the lower unit (Just below the water pump) is probably fine if your lower unit oil is not white and creamy. It should be the color of oil. If that seal is bad it is one of the easiest to replace on the lower unit.
