DON'T push the reverse buton or you'll have even more trouble. You have the wrong shift switch. The one you have is for a Hydro-Electric shift, a completely different animal. Pushing reverse will make it try to go into both forward and reverse at the same time and probably bust something.

As for the ignition switch, I don't know what you have. But I can tell you that to shut it off, you need to connect the two black wires together. That is what the correct ignition switch does when you turn it to the off position.

im almost sure the selector i have is selectric shift its identical to the one that came with the boat and the reverse worked fine i think i had the rpms a little low when i put it in rev. the motor was about to die anyways so i think thats it but what got me going koo-koo is the switch when i have it in gear and shut the switch off the prop stops spinning but the motor wont die i also need to find a generator for this engine any ideas??

FR, any serial numbers or part numbers on those units that he can post so we know exactly what he has? A photo might help too.

Re: In Desperate Need

Switch not connected to anything as pictured above. Shift switch in neutral. Ohm meter lead connected to terminal "2". Ohm meter set to high ohms. Other meter lead connected to "N" or "R" should reveal NO reading if switch is the correct switch.

Disconnect the shift wires leading to the lower unit at the engine. Ohm reading on either shift wirte to lower unit should be 8 ohms.

With wires still disconnected, set meter to read DC volts. Engine not running but with key ON with switch in neutral. There should absoilutely no voltage reading at either wire.

Re-connect the shift wires. With either the "N" or "R" button pushed in,there should be a full 12 volt reading at either related wire. Anything less than 12 volts will not activate the electro magnetic shift coils in the lower unit.

Re: In Desperate Need

That's the vacuum cutoff switch. It shuts the engine down if it gets into a runaway condition, like if you rev it too high in neutral, then turn the throttle off suddenly. Don't disconnect it.

Re: In Desperate Need

Go back and read my previous post. You have the wrong shift switch. The correct one only has 3 terminal on the bottom and is different inside, though they look the same on the outside.

Read what I said about the black wires at the ignition switch. If connecting the two black wires together causes the engine to stop, then everything is OK between there and the motor and you have a bad or wrong key switch. If connecting the two black wires together does not kill the engine, then trace them back till you find the problem. One of them goes to the center nut of the vacuum cut-off switch and the other one goes up to the magneto under the flywheel. There is also another black wire going from the same nut on the vacuum cut-off switch to the magneto. The vacuum cut-off switch is the thing you previously pictured.

You probably have the wrong key switch, if it came with the incorrect shift switch that you have. In fact you probably don't even have the correct cable which would complicate things. I'll bet you don't even have two black wires at the key switch, do you? Wrong control.

I have given you good advice. Your choice to believe me or not believe me.

EDIT: OK, after thinking about it there is a slim chance that you have a five terminal push button switch that would work. Very slim. However, the fact that it goes forward when you push neutral is all the evidence I need that it is a Hydro-Electric switch.
