Re: Inboard vs. Outboard

For me outboards are easier to work on and because I purchase older boats its very important. I just have an easier time getting to everything but on the flip side I/O are more familiar to most people(car engines). Its not the engine I have a problem with on I/O its the outdrive especially on older boats. And I like to go fast and there are not many options to go ~60 cheaply with I/O.

How do you tilt that OB up? From this angle looks like the platform is in the way.

Its probably easiest to see my project thread in my signature. I have a youtube video of how it all works as well. The OB has full range of motion, I made a hinge for that rear piece to tilt up and out of the way for the OB when trailering, etc.

Just keep in mind, I'm not completely done yet.

Re: Inboard vs. Outboard

For me I/O make for a better looking boat. Some OB are neat looking but the cool factor is not there.

I recently rented a 09 Vette in Vegas, I got chill bumps when I walked up to that car. My wife was embarrassed because I popped the hood to look at the motor before I ever got in the car. Tears came to my eyes, it was a thing of beauty :). Now put that LS3 motor on the back, not so much :D

Anything Else I/O

Which boat below would you pick?

What did you use for the gelcoat repairs and where did you get it?

Also, I dont have any but for future reference, how did you get the rust stains off?

Well, the floor is Durabak if that's what you were asking about. I used Barkeeper's Friend to remove the rust stains. $1.99 at HD.

No, I was talking about on the outside of the hull where you repaired the places where the gelcoat had chipped off. I have a few places on mine where the gelcoat is chipped off that I need to repair.

When you ride around on freshwater manmade lakes, you see lot's of I/Os. When you move to the ocean you see many more outboards and inboards and much fewer I/Os. Serious saltwater boats, for the most part below 26 feet, are outboards.

I think straight inboards are the prettiest.

dorelse, I already thought your rear bench seat and sunpad were good ideas. Now that I've seen the video with all the storage I think it's simply ingenious! Great work.

Re: Inboard vs. Outboard

I've never understood why no one has come up with a production bowrider that puts the sundeck over the back of the outboard, or near as you can get to it...

The did do this in a production boat back in the early 90s. The boat manufacturer was "SunBird" and it had a johnson 115hp motor under the sundeck. The entire engine cover was painted black and had a small tag that said "quietrider" or something like that. It looked like an I/O on the water but there was an outboard under there. It didnt mount directly to the transom either, it was on a bracket probably 6-8 inches off the back.

Google search "quietrider boat" or similar.

I know someone that has one for sale, 2500 I think they're asking.

Re: Inboard vs. Outboard

I know this thread is getting repetitive but I do like that outboards are designed "for" boats and not adapted to them. Having never owned an outboard I can't really speak for them however.

Re: Inboard vs. Outboard

Looks like the "Quietrider" concept needed a little more work:

From http://www.boatingmag.com/article.asp?article_id=744&section_id=1

Following Seas: Not-So Intelligent Design

OMC Quiet Rider. Introduced in 1993, dead by 1995. Sunbird and OMC put a fiberglass shroud over an outboard so the boat looked like a stern drive with a large hump on the swim platform. They did it so you wouldn't have an I/O's space-robbing engine in the cockpit. But at only 115 hp, it didn't have an I/O's power. Plus, the lower unit couldn't be lifted out of the water, and it often choked on its own exhaust. Evolutionarily speaking, the Nomad found a niche and will survive ? the evolutionary equivalent of the platypus. The Mainship arrived in an environment it wasn't suited for and was killed off. And the Quiet Rider was just too stupid to live.

Re: Inboard vs. Outboard

I saw that...I can't find a picture of the thing!

Seems, well, dumb to enclose the entire thing...I just want a sundeck that extends out and above the motor...it could & should be open from the back and still allow the motor to tilt into the splashwell. (I'll be adding 'walls' to my splashwell this fall to completely keep the rear dry.)

Tahoe has one that's close...but I'm not a Tahoe fan. The 2009 Glastron SSV O/B model would have been a perfect candidate.

Anyone got a picture of the Sunbird?

Re: Inboard vs. Outboard

Here's some pics of one that's for sale by Chris Craft. You'll have to go to Denmark to get it though ....

http://www.dba.dk/asp/soegning/detail.asp?annonceid=60554463

Geesh...spend the time & effort to bury the outboard underneath all that 'stuff', then don't even make the topside usable for anything?

You gotta wonder sometimes...thanks for the link though, never seen one quite like that...
