I have a chance to get an old Scott McCulloch 40 horse for nothing other than some time and gas to go get it. But I was wondering if it is worth my time to do so. Can anybody tell me anything about these old motors and if parts are even still available for them? I am looking at a 200 mile trip to get it but don't want to make it for something that I can't get parts for. I am not looking at this as a primary motor just something to tinker around with.

Re: Info on McCulloch

I owned one in the late sixties, and it was bullet proof. I didn't know squat about maintenance, tune ups, or have the resources to do anything even if I knew. Don't have a clue about parts ... but I caught a bunch of saltwater fish in front of that jewel. ;)

Re: Info on McCulloch

Scotts were good, reliable engines.

Had a 33 that I put together from a basket of parts. When I needed anything I got it from tcoutboard.com (used). Don't know about new parts, but I rarely replace anything that can be reused (except impellers and gearcase plug gaskets).

If you decide you don't want it. . . .um, er. . .let me know :)

Thanks for the imput. I have found some used parts around on the web in differant places. My Wifes Uncle has the motor and says it was running two years ago when he put it up in the basement. Think I will go ahead and get it. I have a couple of marinas looking to see if one it had a water pump and if new ones are available.

Re: Info on McCulloch

Had an old Scott Atwater once, 22hp. Had the fiberglas hood; late '50's or early '60's vintage. Used it in the Gulf of Mexico and don't remember how much post fishing trip washing I did.

But I sold the rig and later saw it with another engine. Found out later that the Scott had developed a leak from the water jacket to the cylinder combustion chamber. Guess it corroded through; but that's just a guess. I was not partisian to the activity that resulted in the engine swap.

We had a little 10 hp with Gold cover and dark green everything else; bailamatic and all backin the early-mid '50's. Never had any problems with it but it was just too small to push dad and me around in rented skiffs. Course at the time we were lucky to have that.

Never forget. In the morning the bay was quiet. You'd go out to fish. By afternoon, the wind was always blowing 25 or so. So with tiller steering, you got sopping wet and the hand that wasn't on the tiller handle was helping the bailamatic bail out the water that splashed in.

Mark
