Inhouse water system questions.......

Again this year I cleaned out and refilled my watertanks, only to find that when I open the hot water tap in the galley, nothing comes out, and the pump does NOT even run. The cold works no problem. I tried the hot water shower on the transom though, and it worked fine. So I then emptied and refilled the tanks again with no luck. So I started disconnecting the hoses, and connected the galley hose directly to the hot water source, no luck, then connected it directly to the pump, and I managed to get "some" water flow, but still not at full pressure. So next I made sure the galley hose was empty all the way through, and up to the bathroom as well since it's on the same line. This time with the galley hose still connected directly to the pump, I got water with full pressure, so I reconnected all the hoses properly, and everything was still perect.

So my question is........what's happening to the one line from the hot water tank to the galley tap that's causing this problem. Even though I've fixed it, I don't know what I really did to fix it ;)

Also, I've discovered that my water pump runs quickly about every ten minutes, and I've traced the problem to between the tank and pump, so I believe that would be a backpressure problem with the pump. Can the pump itself be fixed, or do I need to get a new one?

thanks for any input :)

Re: Inhouse water system questions.......

If you mean the pump runs every 10 minutes when the water is turned off, then the check valve in the main line is leaking back. The valve may be part of the pump or a separate piece near the pump.

yes, that's what I meant, and if the checkvalve is part of the pump, is it replaceable, or do I need to buy a whole new pump? thanks ;)

Some are and some aren't, you need the pump manufacturer and model # and then either look it up on the web or go to a marine supply house.

thanks BB, now can anyone come up with any explanations as to why I always have trouble getting hot water pressure every spring ;)

ended up ordering a new pump as they're were repair kits available, but they did not include any check valves :(
Still looking for replies though to my pressure problem :)

jawzzy, without actually seeing the system, its hard to say why the galley didn't work. these systems are really quite simple in theory. you have one pump that basicly builds pressure in the system to a certain point and then shuts off. if the water leaks back thru the pump to the holding tank, pressure is reduced and the pump cut back on. I think you may have had some trash in the line to the galley and you eventually cleared it while working on it.. If the lines are the clear plastic type it may be a good idea to change them out depending on how old they are. They can get pretty nasty inside...

A glogged line is what I thought of too, but with all my efforts, all that ever came out of the hose was water or air, but maybe I missed something sneaking out ;) They are braded plastic, so I'll have to look into your suggestion. Thanks for the info :)

check for sediment in the hot water tank, if you drain the tank in the fall, and refill, all the curd in the tank is stirred up, when refilling. thats why your home water heater has a connection on the bottom of the tank, so you can periodically connect a hose and wash the crud out of the bottom.
