I have been hearing slight noises that I thought were backround noise from my tv.When I shut the tv off late last night I still heard the slight noise.Kind of a grinding noise but you really have to concentrate to hear it.I followed it to where I thought it was coming from and it was an outside wall in my livingroom.I put my ear to the wall and sure enough thats where it is coming from. Not loud enough to be an animal but a consistant grinding noise.I am going on vacation this week and dont want to start opening up my walls.I was thinking of drilling a small hole and pumping in some bug bomb or some propane or something like that.Well maybe not something as combustable as propane but you get the idea.Any suggestions are welcome.Charlie

Forget the propane. Bad idea.<br /><br />Usually, you can bomb through an electrical outlet.

The propane was not an idea, just an example.I would not want to experience the "Big Bang Theory" first hand.Charlie

propane and a match sure would get rid of what ever it is. Just make sure you have adequate insurance and you enter yourself in the Darwin Awards to save me the bother. (just kidding) I know you didn't real mean propane but with a name like crazy charlie I think DJ was just makng sure. If it sounds like something chewing up your house I would call the exterminator for sure. If they are in one wall you can bet there in others. It may cost a bit up front to have the place sprayed properly, but it'll be cheaper in the long run.

Several varieties of wood chewing critters cannot be killed with a "simple bomb." Might need to get ahold of SBN and get one of his BIG BOMBS. You know he likes to "BOMB 'EM!"<br /><br />Seriously, if you want to go the route of trying a bug bomb while you are away, that is cool, but you might return to find it didn't touch the little buggers.<br /><br />We have a boring wood beatle in the beams (decorative barn beams that are 150 years old). After trying everything with no luck, we got a terminator who said the only way to get rid of those things was to tent the whole building and fumigate. Too expensive and the bugs will take 100 years to eat away at the none structural beams they are chewing. Told they would not go into the kiln dried wood. Decided to listen to the little buggers chew - much cheaper that way.<br /><br />If we had gotten the professional advice first (and listened) it would have saved us some money and a lot of work. Tried to do it ourselves, which in this case didn't help.

what your describing sounds very much like carpenter ants. i experienced that particular problem. take off a outlet cover or switch cover as close to the noise as you can and look for signs of fine sawdust. if you find it, you will have to remove the siding outside to eradicate the nest. and then monthly, spray your foundation with a good quality ant spray. believe me, they will eat your wood framing. i know from experience. good luck, and i hope you dont have them.....bob

Typically carpenter ants are attracted to water damaged wood. Look for that outside your house. Also they tend to come in the house and wander around usually at night. They are big black ants. If you catch one they will sting you. They have an acid in their saliva that burns a little when they bite you. They are very killable however you need to find where their nest is and why they are coming into your house. Also you will need to find out what kind of damage they have already caused. Good luck

Re: insects inside my walls???

Just went through this same senario last week myself CC. They were indeed carpenter ants(little rat ba$tards). What I did was to drill a small hole in between every stud and blow in boric acid powder. It comes in plastic bottles that you can snip off the end to just the size you need to fit the holes you drilled. Time consuming, but it worked. When I started drilling, I guess it pi$$ed them off and they started to come out the holes by the dozens(shop-vac took care of that).<br />Haven't seen one since, and they were around every night for a couple weeks before I did the boric acid deal.<br />Good luck<br /> JasonJ is one of the pro exterminators on the board. Maybe he can give some good advice also.<br /><br />Dave

Thanks guys!!!!! I did have some ants running around inside the house this spring but I put out a dozen ant baits and assumed that took care of them.Sounds like I was wrong.I will drill a few holes since there are no outlets on that wall.I gotta lean toward M.Y. and have trouble believing that you can hear ants???I am a little relieved that no one mentioned termites.....yet?? Definately sounds like Carpenter Ants. Bang on the wall where you hear the sound, and the sound should increase. People often think the sound they are hearing is chewing when in fact they click their mandibles when agitated, especially when you pound on the wall. They also are fairly noisy when they are walking, the acoustics of the wall tends to amplify the sounds. I usually gas them with a machine that pumps pure pyrethrium gas into the void. There is no mistaking when they are hit, it sounds like heavy rain on a roof when they are all running around dying in the wall. I then use 80 psi of air in a portible cannister to force Timbor into the wallvoids by drilling a hole on the outside of electrical outlet boxes after removing the plates. That is enough force to cause it to move along the wiring and plumbing (which they use to move around the home), and also up the insulation. Without this force, just squirting a borate through a hole by hand does little. You have to approach carpenter ants with a working knowledge of home construction, or you are spinning your wheels. You have to asess why they are there. They are after food and moisture. They do not eat wood, and they live near moisture damage, but can also infest a perfectly dry home. <br /><br />I also spray a residual liquid on the entire exterior of the home, the crawlspace, and the interior baseboards. This one treatment lasts for 1 year, with one followup treament per year afterwards. Companies that sell you monthly service to eliminate carpenter ants are just taking your money. It is unethical but goes on all the time.<br /><br />Yes, Crazy Charlie, Mellow Yellow, the ants are very audible. Most people think they have mice when they hear it.

He is correct<br />I was just quoted some outrageous prices and monthly services last week for the ants.<br /><br />It took about a year or so for the ants to leave but once the area dried out they weren't interested in the house anymore. <br /><br /> http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=37;t=000577 <br /><br />Thanks again Jason.

CC, pro only. It is a liquid that is converted to a gas in a machine. Its expensive and very hazardous if not educated on how to use it. Sorry....<br /><br />I serviced a house a few years ago where the guy had Carpenter Ants in his ceiling. He drilled multiple holes, and went through a lot of work to braze together a maze of tubing, which lead from the exhaust output of a small generator motor and branched out to the holes (must have been 30+ holes). Needless to say he ran that thing for many, many hours, and it did nothing to the ants. I used his holes, gassed with my machine through the holes, and the ceiling vomitted hundreds of ants in a matter of minutes. Gots ta have the right tool for the job...
