Installing a water pressure gauge

I am going to replace my water pump impellar and decided to add a water pressure gauge to identify any premature water pump problems and prevent over heating. My engine is a '65 33 hp 'Rude. 1 question is who are the water pressure gauges installed? I assume it will come with instructions, but are there any other parts I will need to finish the install? Also, is it recommended to add a "pee" hose, the motor doesn't currently have one? Or will the gauge be an even more accurate measure making the pee hose not necessary?

Thanks in advance

No need for a tell-tale , if you install a guage.

Im not sure on your engine as to the best way to install it.

Go to teleflex site , they should have the information you'll need.

If not Paul Moir , is the guy to ask.

He knows his buisness, on the older motors.

Anybody have the Teleflex website? I tried to google it and didn't come up with anything.

Thanks

Once you are in, if the black bar appears, click "Remove This Frame" in the black bar.

Then navigate to Trouble shooting and scroll down to Outboard Water Pressure on the right side.

Re: Installing a water pressure gauge

Okay I got the manual and looked at the section that I am 99.9% applies to my engine...but I have no clue how to do these instructions. I have underlined the parts that I am confused on. Also, high-level, how does the water pressure gauge work?? Does it capture the pressure water is coming out of the water exhaust port? Can anyone please help shed light on this lost soul....thanks

"EVINRUDE/JOHNSON OUTBOARDS
40,48, AND 50 HP, 1989 and later:
Carefully drill a 1/4" diameter hole in front Port corner of lower engine cowling. [What is the lower engine cowling?] Remove any burrs or sharp edges.
Route tubing thru hole, along electrical wiring to exhaust
cover area. If exhaust cover (See Figure 4) is so
equipped, remove and discard water pressure plug. If
exhaust cover does not have threaded plug, center punch pocket area [what is this referring to?]. Drill an 11/32" hole. Coat a 1/8" NPT pipe
thread tap with grease [does it matter what kind of grease, like white lithium grease?]. Thread tap just deep enough to establish full thread engagement. Apply gasket sealer to threads of elbow fitting (See Figure 3) provided, and install elbow. Barb should point down. Cut tubing to correct length and install on barb."

Re: Installing a water pressure gauge

Cowl is the cover for the engine. They are saying to drill through the front of the lower cover for the hose to lead to the guage.

The grease is to stick to the metal particles so that they will not wind up in the motor (stickier the better, I guess).

The entry point on the exhaust cover is beyond my ken. You have to know exactly where you can intersect the flow of water on your motor.

I noticed in the parts manual that the gasket pictures for the exhaust cover show some large holes in the lower left corner. That may be the entry point and the gasket might be a good template. Maybe someone can confirm.

Thanks ezeke for answering most of the questions. I figured the cowling was just the cover.

Now I will wait to see if anyone can help me identify where to do the tap on the exhaust housing.

Why don't you see if Paul Moir can tell you?

Re: Installing a water pressure gauge

Not long ago, someone had posted pics on exactly where to drill. Had pics of their own motor. Damn if I can find them or remember who did it....I would start a new post with the title of "Where do I drill for a water pressure gauge"..
