I received the gaskets I need to replace my head gasket on my 99 mercruiser 5.7l carbarated engine.

I have a couple of questions:

Does the Intake manafold gaskets go on dry? Without any gasket sealer?

Also there was some kind of silicone between the Intake manafold and block. It was a fairly thick bead.

Do I just use high temp gasket maker? (like PERATEX Ultra BLack Gasket maker)

Thanks

Re: Intake Manafold

Ayuh,... If you bought a Quality set like say Fel-Pro's,...
The gaskets go on Dry...
RTV is used alone on the front,+ back of the manifold, where it meets the Block...
If you use the gasket strips provided,...
RTV must be used at the ends where the strips meet the gaskets...

Re: Intake Manafold

Thanks

I bought Quiksilver gaskets. I'll put the gaskets on dry and use permatex on the intake to block gap.

Use rtv on the ends, the rubber can slide out then you have to do the process all over again. I use a little gasket adhesive on the intake gaskets at each end just to keep it from wiggling around and becoming misaligned.

I dont use the end rubbers at all...just put a 3/8in bead of RTV down and then set the intake...leave what oozes out there...thats what the factory does in the mid/late 90s...

BOTH surfaces MUST be clean and free of grease....it wont leak

Yeah. Older flat paper gaskets...good idea to use permatex around the water passages in the ends.

Re: Intake Manafold

do not waste your money on plastic based vortec intake gaskets, the felpro aluminum based gaskets are the only ones worth using, that way you only have to do it once. I bet the old gaskets were plastic based and collapsed. what do you think more plastic ones will do

Re: Intake Manafold

Unless Merc changed them, it is just the GM plastic/silicone ones they have been using from the start.
