Re: Interior Refinishing (Durabak didn't last long!)

I coated the interior of my boat 2 years ago and have seen no wear or fading at all to my finish. I run a charter boat and it sees alot of abuse and neglect from customers and I can't say that I'm unsatisfied at all on the preformance of the durabak.

230-Magnum.

Thanks for the response. I assume you purchased and received the UV resistant material? It's good to hear that it is holding up for you.

Ondarvr,

I think I decided against the gel-coat, and I'm going to go ahead and buy another gallon of the blue and re-coat the current faded stuff. Everything was good about it except the fading...and from what I've heard and discussed with the durabak folks, the UV resistant material will be fine. At $119.95 per gallon, it's pricey, but it will cost me the same in materials to gel coat the interior(sanding disks/gel coat/tape/etc.), not to mention the time it will take me to remove every last bit of the durabak.

For the durabak re-coat, simply scuff the old stuff with 40grit, and apply it...should be painless.

I may also change the floor from light grey to dark grey or even blue.

Hopefully it will hold up.

Will post pics once I get started of the progress.

The boat is already torn down. I will probably place my order tomorrow or monday, and go from there. My only delay will be the possible modification of the front deck. I'd like to add the two side storage boxes/seats you see on a lot of bluewaves and other center consoles.

I may also re-finish my console, using either paint (or I may try gelcoat). I'd like to eventually do the outside of the hull with gel-coat...but that's after I get the interior finished and the engine/rigging back in/on it.

Take care,
SQ

Don't do gel coat on the console or the hull, it takes a long time and lots of sanding, plus there are many steps that need to be done correctly for it to work. Use a 2 part paint, it's much easier and will hold its color and gloss better.

Marine paints like Interlux, Awlgrip, etc look nice, but I'm afraid they aren't as durable as a gel coat. Gel coats are pretty hard, and it takes a pretty good lick to scratch or chip them.

Then again, it takes more work to repair the scratches and chips as well.

I've got a few nicks/scratches in the hull that I need to repair once I get the inside finished...then I'll figure out how I want to coat the outside.

Gelcoating doesn't seem very difficult. The only tedious part seems to be the wetsanding/buffing. Being a painter in the automotive industry...that is second nature to me.

SQ

Send an e-mail to Durabak with a link to this thread. Tell them that thousands of potential customers (boaters with trucks) are watching to see how they resolve an obvious screw-up on their part (shipping the wrong product).

Then its their choice how they choose to look to their potential customers.

Based on whay you have posted so far, I doubt I will ever purchase any product from them.

Shawn,
I ended up with interdeck on new boat (put a little extra rubber in it-also interlux product) and after one season it held up extremely well! It saw a lot of abuse and I am very happy with it over the duraback. Plus its not some wicked thick truck liner it is simply a very durable one part poly paint.
PS. the grey did fade over time!!! but the dirt and grime compinsated :)
