Re: Interlux paint HELP needed

Well i put my first coat on saturday morning came out pretty good had a few runs but most of them layed down and dissapered. Let it dry until monday afternoon when i wet sanded with 400 grit. Put on my second coat this time i used the foam roller instead of the brush to tip. Much better results although there is some very minor orange peel but this is no show boat! I will let this dry for a day or two then wet sand again and put my final coat on! my question is what should i do when the last coat dries wet sand? leave alone? thanks tail_gunner for the foam roller tip worked great :D

You could probably wet sand the last coat to remove any orange peel and then buff it out with polishing compound to restore the gloss.

After you sand with 400, are you getting any scratch marks?

If so you could go up through the numbers, ie 600, 800, 1000 then polish.

Looking forward to some pictures of the "perfection".

Good luck

using 2333n just a splash not even 1 oz, I am using about the same amout of penatrol. As far as the scratch marks with the 400 grit if they are there they are so small i cant see them. I will post a few pics.

Re: Interlux paint HELP needed

If you found that your second coat had orange peel, I would be willing to bet it's because of the short time between first and second coats. The first coat was not fully cured and would have pulled the solvents out of the second coat, causing the second coat to dry up prematurely and not flow out.
Maybe wetsand it flat with 400 now, but wait a bit longer until you put the third coat on (like a week after the 2nd). This will make the third coat flow out like glass (like the 1st coat did).

Re: Interlux paint HELP needed

You are probably getting the peel from the penatrol i would drop that product. It sounds like youve come close to getting a good uniform coat. This is the time to cut out all of your imperctions..Yep your still just prepping for the final coat, When doing that you might want use a 15/20 % mix of 2333n.

You might also try rolling out the paint for 3-4 mins...then go back and flatten. This gives the paint or stippling a minutes to flow and tack up. One note Do not wait for longer than 5 mins to flatten the paint..it will lift and not flatten leaving a mess

Use 400 grit lighty scuff off the finish aka just dull it, there is no need to wet sand...opps dont use water dry sand.

Once you become accustomed to it its very quick and easy....You also will start to notice the small things...:D

I agree, I have used penetrol many times, but only with alkyd paint for door frames; it flows out very well.

The chemical compositions are so different than what you are using ...it might look ok for now but penetrol ambers quite noticeably with age. In a marine environment I would suspect that to be accelerated.

It alleviates brush marks/ orange peel, but there are better ways to deal with that than penetrol.

I was trying to look up how much thinner you can add but I don't have the specs on perfection in my Interlux painting guide regarding maximum use of thinners.

Use the thinnest pile foam roller you can get, that will help

You could also try dragging the roller to lay the coat on instead of
rolling it. Kind of like a squeegee.

A few ideas anyway, hope that helps ya

I agree with dropping the penetrol. Marine paints are highly specialized products. It is best to stick with products designed for marine paints. It is also a good idea to stay with products within a given brand name to be safe. After all, they developed the paint system. To me it is worth a little bit more money to be sure the paint works as advertised.

Re: Interlux paint HELP needed

I thought Interlux Perfection was a two-part polyurethane varnish.

Is it? Or have you tinted it?

I know the interlux painting guide has chart that tells you how much thinner you can safely use, whether brush and roll or spray. I just can't find it at the moment. I believe with spraying you can add as much as 45% thinner. With roll and tip between as much as 20 and 40% to get a flat finish.

Perfection comes in a paint version and a varnish version.
I just finished with the paint, now I bought some varnish to do my teak.. I hope it's as nice as the paint!

Re: Interlux paint HELP needed

Perfection is a two part polyurethane. Max recommended thinning is 25% and only thin if you absolutely need to. Use the correct interlux thinner as stated on the can and in the instruction booklet that is on the lid of the quart can.
You cannot tint Interlux perfection paint but you can mix colors with some success. Darker colors are less opaque and require more coats. Choose the gray primer if you are using a dark color. If you're painting over two different colors prime with two coats of Interlux 2 part primer first.

Interlux Perfection is not an easy paint to get used to applying. I did my splash well today and during the process, experienced a 5 degree temp change. I was applying it with 5% thinner in 58 degree weather when I started and it was fine but when the temp dropped it was too thin and I got a few sags that I'll have to sand out.

If you are using the roll and tip method the badger hair brush is a must and I recommend that you never thin it unless the temp is approaching the 75 degree mark. Insted of thinning, preload your brush with Interlux 2333N brushing thinner and shake it out, don't dry it. Do that about every 5 to 10 minutes and you'll have no problems.

Hey Tail Gunner,

What techniques do you use, that differ from the interlux manual?

I haven't used their two part poly, but have sprayed the Brightside poly before with excellent results. I did a boat at least ten yrs ago and it is still holding up well. I did a green stripe on that boat, with rustoleum I think, that has held up equally well though.

I'm thinking about using Perfection or Interthane Plus, spraying of course...I'm a commercial painter. I'd like to use a higher end product on this boat as I plan on keeping it.

Do you have any experience using/spraying Interthane?

Thanks

Re: Interlux paint HELP needed

well i put my third and final coat on this morning with the roller I did about half the hull then came back with a diffrent clean roller and tipped it. Let me just say it looks like glass!!!! :D there is a few spots where it looks like some very very fine hair blew on to it but for painting it outside it looks amazing. I highly reccomend throwing away the badger hair brush save your 24 dollars and use the cheap foam rollers. Thanks a million tail gunner fore this tip. I may just let it dry for a few days then put the deacls and hardware back on without sanding a polishing. Or do you reccomend sanding and polishing??? (let it dry a little then pics to follow)

Congrats it is pretty rewarding when it works out well. Do not try to sand and buff, the finsih will only dull. But as i said you will see the small things..;) The more you understand just how the paint flows out you can obtain better and better result's

You could always cut every litte perfection out of the paint and roll her one more time...:D

I have sprayed both Bright Sides and Perfection, Bright Sides is very easy to spray and Perfection is both very heavy and very dangerous to spray. This is just a opinion but rolling it out and rolling it flat... for me is just to easy. Very little setup time..no over spray...no high end respirator no paint suits and no clean up to speak of..:D

Lets see jeremy's results, im sure there going to be nice.

Edit: Now shooting the base coat...aka primer as in prime coat. that is a different story. It does not level and dries as hard a rock..That i shoot.

Looks great!
Maybe I will roll and tip... will save on clean up.
Well done... can't wait to see it finished.
How much perfection did you end up using?

Cheers

One quart did three coats had a little left over probably enough for 4 coats. It is an 18 foot boat so it was more than enough. Iam thinking I may do one last coat for the heck of it!

from what i recall of their site, perfection was designed for roll n tip. i'm not 100% on that though.

jeremy...did you use more thinner on the last coat as mentioned earlier in the thread?

Thanks Tail Gunner,

I do have all correct gear ...full face respirator.

I have sprayed all kinds of nasty stuff,(Electro-stated lockers with epoxy/MEK,aliphatics...), but yea the high end solvents , clean up and disposal are all cons.

Plus the roll and tip Jeremy's done look real good.

Thanks for the tips..your Wife too!:D
