interlux perfection

I just applied the third coat of Perfection to the topside of my boat. Every coat seemed to leave mini bubbles which I haven't been able to avoid. So after each coat I sand. My question... do I sand after the final coat?

If I don't sand, the finish is mirror-like glossy, but there are a few minor imperfections like bubbles and windblown debris like hair, insects, or grass clippings. I think I need to sand these down (what grit should I use?), but then I'll lose my glossy finish. What do I do after sanding (polish, buff, wax) for the best finish?

IMO your going to have to re-prep and re-coat..

If there are bugs and hairs in there..you cant buff them out..

Interlux perfection is a hard number to dial as far as blending or buff.. You should really get the Best roll and tip..leave it alone for a season..then finish it ( sand/buff ). Dont ever touch young paint with a wheel IMHO...

In my experience any bubbles {blisters } were caused by wax or oil residue impregnated in hairline cracks and you can`t get rid of them as long as the cracks are there......any of them present ? sample

Perfection is tricky stuff to paint with as you know by now. If you are using a foam roller to apply, it is difficult not to have these tiny surface dimples from the air bubbles. Like YD said you will need to recoat. Some suggestions: 1.) If you want to use the foam rollers again, then very lightly rollout the final coat, right after you apply to paint, with the same roller (dryer). This will minimize the size of the surface bubbles and leave a more uniform finish. 2.) Try the roll and tip method. Tipping does work well and it will give you a very smooth finish. I personally couldn't get this to work but I think that using a very short nap roller instead of a foam roller will help put a little more paint on the surface which should help with the tipping. You cannot buff out perfection paint so whatever you have after you apply will be the final result. Final paint can be sanded with 400 grit before re-application.

I have been a proffessional painter for over 25 years. I 've painted two
boats with perfection - roll + tip, and I have put 4, coats on my console,and other boat pieces with an iwata spray gun. Cut the paint, and tip with a clean brush - new brushes have a bunch of lint in them! I clean mine with a vacume, and flick the bristols 50, times. I had a terrible time with varnishing - looked like bubbles. It took me a year, and 5, or 6, coats on 60, pieces of teak to figgure out that the new brushes were the culprit - the lint looked like bubbles. Spraying is the way to go, but you can get a good job by tipping. Water, or high humidity before cure will kill the shine! If you don't tip you will get bubbles with a foam roller. I use 400
wet between coats.
