I got a letter from AT&T Yahoo today increasing thier rates 50%, thinking about changing. Has anyone ever used PeoplePC.Com through AARP for seniors?
I would like high speed cable, but just cannot justify the expense for just web surfing and a few forums. I don't have DSL out in the rural area here, lucky just to have decent telephone service.

Re: Internet service proviers?

I did and still have peoplepc.
My contract ran out 5 year ago when I went to cable and I still have my webpage, email addy etc with them.
Has not been costing me a dime either.
Don't know what's up with that.
Pretty good service and speed for dial up.
I think it's even better now, don't know.

Re: Internet service proviers?

I'd go with Juno....had P/PC ...prefer Juno though. I'm Cable wireless share off the neighbor (yeah, she knows..we split the cost)....the dial up is for when I need to (I'm on hold with no charge) get internet during our windstorms, and the gar-in-teed power out's that follow. I make a quick call, I'm in for a month again..then cancel. They seem cool with the arrangement..

I use mailaka.net for my backup and they are a national provider which means that you will likely have a local number wherever you happen to be.They are v9* whatever the latest is,v92 I think and unlimited access is $9.95 a month. They were $6.95 for years and just went up within the last year.Tech support is free as well.Worth a look.Ron G

You know, they do have a $0 option? Limited at 12 hours per month, but that sounds like it's not a problem for what you are needing it for. And you wouldn't need to call/cancel over and over... :)

Re: Internet service proviers?

I signed up for a tria,l @ $4.95 mo for first 4 months. I actually think it is a little faster than my Prodigy/Yahoo. I played around a little w/it yesterday, but found some things I did not care for. I fished all day today, so just got home and relaxing for the evening.
Thanks for the replys.

Re: Internet service proviers?

I have been using PoplePC for a few days and I am not too impressed. You don't pay much and you don't get much. I may try another provider nex month seeing I have already paid for this month.
I had an e-mail today from a cousin and she had tried them also and did not like them so she switched.

Re: Internet service proviers?

Well something must have happened to them in the last 4 or 5 years cause when I was on dial up, they were what I had and always had good luck with them and like I said, my contract ran out then and I can still use them if I wanted to.
Guess they never have caught on that I don't/haven't paid in 4 or 5 years.

Re: Internet service proviers?

Pulled the pin tonight and uninstalled PeoplePC, that was the easy part. Then called them, that is the only way to discontinue the service, that took about a 15-20 minute wait and about 5 minutes of questions and the foreign voice on the other end trying to convince me to stay with them, but finally succeded.
While I was in the remove program, I noticed a bunch of Earthlink stuff on my hard drive, that was a lot harder to get rid of, I am still not convinced it all went away, seems like it was embedded there by Dell Computers.
Now to start the search over again.

Re: Internet service proviers?

We have At&t our selves, use to be bell south. It did increase for us also but not by but $2 dollars or so. I didn't even know that Juno existed still, I believe we had Juno years ago as an internet service and they were alright, I don't know how they are now a days. Windows XP already has the earthlink and other internet services they suggest using on it when it's installed by the computer manufacture. Computer manufactures may add a promotion for an internet service by installing it into the computer also or sending a disc with the computer when it's shipped. I don't recommend any of them that windows suggest, definitely don't go with AOL. The key is finding an internet service that will let you dial to a local server number or closest town server number by you. Some internet services like AOL have been known to setup an account using a long distance server number to dial into. You can go into the internet service properties under "connect to" to see if the server number is local to you. Reason I mention this is because dialing a long distance server number it can cause poor service when using the internet, it could possibly charge you long distance fee's also. Remember that AOL blows, you think you have problems removing internet services, files, and programs off of your computer now, AOL is really bad at that mess. We almost went to People PC internet service our selves. Don't have DSL here either in our area of town (out in the country), and cable internet is high, especially if your not a cable member down here.

Re: Internet service proviers?

I found it cheaper to go with cable internet ($42), I dont have a land line here and that would be about $30 a month by its self! And cable (so far);) has been more reliable than dsl and of course faster than dial-up (I have 3 computers on most of the time). This may not be an option in your area (BTDT)

we dont have a land line at home either. time warner cable internet and vonage phone... costs $75 a month for both, we were paying $70 just for phone from verizon. we need the unlimited LD because all my family and friends are LD, so it made sense for us to go that route. its hard to find a decent home land line for a good price now.

Cable would be nice, but prices very for different states. I figured it up for all 3 computers that are in the house (and networked together on dial up). To hook all three on the cable internet using the cable companies equipment for all of us to get on line would be around $85. Which is a little to much for us, I like the $21 dollars for the dial up internet (even though the service sucks at times), and I got them all networked together. Now if we get DSL, theres a chance I might look into it, now I hear they are coming up with something better then DSL. By the time they come out with the new internet, we'll probably get DSL in our area.

Road Runner High Speed. It does not matter how many computers are on it,same price.I have a wireless router on one PC and 3 others getting internet off the wireless.I can take my laptop to the shed, camper or 3 doors down at the neighbors and have great signal.. 5mb speed and 45 bucks a month.
After having this i would never go back to DSL or dial up..

Cable company's equipment???? All they supply you with, should be the modem.... Buy a router ($50 at Wal-Crap) and away you go.

I have a wireless network setup in the house here, and I don't think I spent more than $100 for everything... All I have is a monthly payment for sevice from my phone company for DSL. And even that's not bad.... $85 for phone, DSL, and Dish Network satellite service.

I installed a wireless internet package at a local campground we frequent in the summer. Had Charter come in, dig in a cable line, give me the modem, and they have the FASTEST TIER of service. Cost $75 to bring in (they've never had ANY cable there, TV or otherwiese), and their monthly service costs them $75, because it's for a business. Then, I have it linked to the router, and wall-aah.... Internet all over the place. (Actually, I had some more to do, but don't want to bore with the details -- like adding a range expander -- and got the flux capacitor, well, fluxxing.):D

For residential service, I know the cable, in our area anyway is relatively inexpensive.

Wanna see people cry? Have them go to a campground, use the wireless internet, and then go home to dial-up.
