We just moved into our weekend lake house yesterday and we had the boat in our lake for the first time. Temperature??? In the 60's. It was perfect for boating. Today in the 60's and we will boat again!! We are going to go as often as we can because once the boat is put away for the winter, no boating for months. Enjoy it while you can!!!

I'm not sure I'd call 911. If there's a marina/resort on the lake, call them. Or, flag someone down to give you a tow. Most boaters are willing to help out. Up here in the woods, we have a constable that lives on the lake. He's goes out in his pontoon and hauls people to the landing. I'd use 911 as a last resort. If you do call them, they will transfer you off the emergency line so it wont be tied up. Confidence man! Think positive. You wont have any problems(take a cell phone just in case).:)

You can just about google search almost anywhere you boat, do a google search of where your going to boat and locate all the marina's or services in the area and bring numbers with you and have them on hand if you don't have a marine radio, Be prepared.

The only thing I can think of that would make a trip this time of year painful is falling in, other wise its dock to dock:)

i usually take my boat out more in the winter than the summer..

once it was MINUS 9 degrees F

of course we were in salt water......and were busting solid slush about 6" deep...

I have boated fresh water as cold as 15 dgrees.....got to keep the lower unit in the water when you turn off the motor!!!

other wise your impeller will freeze and you will shear a pin when you start it again

Low 50's and partly cloudy here today, still had fun just with more clothes on.
Saw 3 Jet skis on the lake and the lake is pretty chilly.

Hoping for some 70's this week.

man, all ya die hard boaters made me feel bad... so i had to go out yesterday. mid fifties... was just fine. especially when the sun came out. after it was evident that the sun was gonna be gone, i put my aft curtain up. then i was for sure fine.
actually were quite a few boats out. several sailors and fishermen. a few cruisers.. just busier than i thought i'd be...
I'd go as far to say the colder it is, the better performance you will enjoy.
i felt like i enjoyed that. top of wot for me is 4300, i was getting 4400... she was running good... :)

good advise wb2. i'd not thought of having my main marina phone number on hand. it's now stored in my phone. i do have vhf, but not many others do, so the vhf is kinda a mute point in my case. also got a couple of friends numbers in my phone. they got boats, so they could come to my assistance too. one did last year too..
guess i'm on the extended season now. sat. night it got down to 30*F. felt good that i didn't believe the weather man who said the low was gonna be 35.. creaton.... i drained my block and manifold for that night...

had me several nights of 50* weather too these last few weekends. sleeping on board was just fine in that too w/full cover + a sleeping bag.. lowest low was 48*. had horrible condensation on the inside of the boat though....

cold weather boating can be fun. but i don't know about anything under 48 yet... may be calling it a season here.... not because of temps, but because the funds have run dry... :(

when it is really cold the wind is what gets you... and it is really miserable when you are quartering in rough windy seas......yuk

in the REALLY cold weather pdf's, are just for helping the rescuers find your body

You certianly wouldn't make a good Striper fisherman if you question boating in 60 degree temps. :D

Regularly leave the dock with temps in the low to mid-20's with water temps in the mid to upper 30's. Typicaly warms into the mid 40's that time of the year.

Our sac-a-lait (crappie) start bedding up good here when it is still cold (for here). Maybe in the 30's to 50's. I go all the time. The only bad part is that initial run to your spot. No enclosures on the boats. Mostly bass boats and open ones like mine. Wear a good coat, gloves and life vest. Alot of the harder core bass fisherman will wear motorcycle helmets in the winter when making their runs in the cold. Keeps your boogers from freezing! :)

Of course it is! As long as my local river isn't froze over or at flood stage, I launch! They pull our courtesy docks out during the first week of November, but I don't use them anyway. Wear a jacket!

Re: is 60s a ok temperture to go boating?

birdgod,

We got our new boat 4 weeks ago and have taken it out 3 weekends since - twice to Hillsdale (south of Olathe) and once to Stockton Lake. We didn't go yesterday since we had some free Chiefs tickets (glad I didn't pay for those - should've just gotten the boat out again with the way the game went  ). Each time it was in the low 70s for highs and would've been just as nice in the 60s since the sun was out.

I went yesterday and really enjoyed it. Mid 60's. It was supposed to get warmer but just didn't happen. Put on the bow cover and closed the windshield and it was fine. My son was a little chilly but he wore a bathing suit and t-shirt. I had on a sweatshirt and shorts.
