Is it dangerous to repair connections on a fuel sending unit

One of the connections on my fuel sending unit is broke. I can fix it but am hesitant due to fear it might break again and spark and explode (it broke once before and did not explode). It seams hazardous to have a wiper moving across a resistive wire in the top of a fuel tank where all the fumes are. What is the principal that makes it safe?

Is the current thru the sender low enough not to spark in the event of it breaking or a bad connection?

Yep!

So go ahead and repair the unit you have. As long as you don't change the resistance too much you should be ok....

You will be fine as long as your repair wont short out. Even then becouse there is no air in your fuel tank the fuel cant ignite. The gas fumes in a tank displaces the air.

There are millions of open electric motors (fuel pumps) running around in cars and trucks today submerged in gas.

On the other hand, you can buy a whloe new sender assembly for less than $30.00 here on iboats.
