Picking up something on the water was how I got a nice bumper and even better a really nice 2 person tube.

Now that's a good marina, I would give that guy my business. Imagine a Marina owner putting off a sale and giving something away.
Yep, Its nice being at a small family owned marina @ 122 slips.. :)

Removing deadheads is not illegal. It is a service that we would all thank you for. If in doubt contact the local sheriff dept or CG. If too large to remove notify the CG and they will issue a securite notifying mariners of the location of the hazard.

Of course this all applies at different levels depending on the waterway you're on. The CG isn't going to do diddly if I find a deadhead on the lake I live on. When I'm on Lake Huron they most certainly want to know the location of a deadhead.

yep, depends on your local regulations. The specific examples where it is illegal to pick up ANYTHING is state park controlled lakes/ponds. For the small ones where it usually is electric motor only type fishing lakes, removing any logs is usually also illegal. (primary purpose is habitat, human use is secondary)

I found a toolbox floating in the creek once. Had several sockets and a couple of screwdrivers inside. kept the tools and threw the box in the trash when I got back to the ramp. This creek you can find several things after a heavy rain, floods easy. Found a Jeep Cherokee once after a flood. It was gone a couple of days later.

I found a nice water ski once- floating upside down in the middle of the river.
Yeah I know what you're thinking- somebody purposly dropped it to do slalom, but after we found it we looked for a boat towing a skier and didn't see any. We decided to hang around at anchor for about 30 minutes to see if anyone would come looking for it- and nobody did.
I put a slalom cup on it and used it for years. Hmmm- I'm thinking it might still be out in the shed!

I hauled a 16' long 4x4 out of the middle of the channel a couple months ago. While unloading it at the dock I saw a friend who said they ran over something at night. I hoisted the chunk of lumber out of my (14' jon) boat and asked, something like this...

If I see something floating I remove it, if I like it, I keep it :D Most of it goes into the dumpster to towed to shore though...

.
In some areas you will see old boats floating or beached that people do not want, and they remove the boat numbers and set it adrift.

That way they do not have to pay someone to haul it of.

Two weeks we'll be heading up to Charleston Lake in Ontario Canada. A (very ) few people think that the lake is there to remove the winter debris from their lot. There will be pieces of broken dock, sticks and some logs that came loose from shore after the ice melted.

The biggest "trophy" so far was a 12-15" diameter log about 40' long that just barely broke the surface of the water. I was taking that to the nearest cove and one of the lake cabin owners yelled "bring that here, I'll take that".

Hats? That could have been my hat. If I had all the hats back that have blown off my head while heading to the next fishing hole, I'd need a room to store them in.
:D

One time we were on the Chesapeake and my step dad's hat kept blowing off. After retreiving it for the third time, I told him either to keep the hat on his head or I would duct tape one for him :D

Re: Is it illegal to pickup items floating?

I grew up on the rivers in arkansas, so i have seen my fair share of logs and stuff. We normally let those go because the current will take them on down the river. We found a huge chunk of styrofoam from someones dock once. played on it with the wave runners for a few hours then went and put it on the bank.

pulled the no wake zone bouy back to the ramp after it got loose, we went in and told them, they just shrugged and said, yea we know its loose.

found a bass boat folding seat, still snapped closed. mounted it in my little flat bottom as a fishing seat.

found a wave runner. all you could see was the bars and seat. the owner was floating beside it trying to figure out what to do. I tied off to it with our wave runner and drug it to the sand bar. took about 8 guys to get it up on dry ground and roll it over to dump it out. apparently the seal under the seat let go, and every time he rolled it, it flooded with water.

I seem to always find something of value every time I go out. First a nice rod /reel combo almost new. Next trip an old siren that makes a good wall hanger, Next trip a new bait knife and on my last trip a plastic patio chair floating in the main channel. I keep a trash can in my boat for shore trash too.
