Today I saw some nice fenders floating and a camo hat. They were still there after my 2 hour trek. This may sound dumb, but I thought of picking them up for the extra fenders and so the hat doesnt get shredded around a prop. (No I would not wear it!)

Is this illegal?

I got a free fender one day on lake griffin... Pick it up. Chances are the guy that lost it won't find it anyway.

I have picked up several fenders over the years. Also a 18/20inch red ball buoy that must have come looses from a gill netter or long line.

Most definitely pick them up. Some material can be a hazard to navigation.

Our lake place is in the back of a cove and in the last several years, I have retrieved a number of fenders. If they have a name and phone #, I'll call them to see if they want to pick them up.

Re: Is it illegal to pickup items floating?

We rounded up an unmanned boat one day about 2 miles out. I called the marine police, they told me to secure it and bring it in I possible, they said if left to drift it would be a navigational hazard and would be hard to find later. I noted the coordinates where we found it and towed it in. No wanted to drag it into the marina, we pushed it ashore just outside the marina and met the Marine Police there. No one had reported it missing and it was 500 miles from the state of registration, which was 13 years out of date. I told the officer I wouldn't mind having it, (after all I knew it floats and didn't take on any water), I was told to take it home, if no one claimed it in 30 days to begin procedure for an abandonment title. An NCIC seach turned up nothing, and I was granted a title after 50 or so days. This was several years ago and the boat has since been fixed up and sold, and is now in use even farther south. They figured that either someone just pushed it out to sea to get rid of it or a storm took it from where ever it was lying. It had a lot of growth on it, so it had been afloat for a long time, and the inside was full of sand and shells, as if it may have been beached for a while, or birds were using it to bust open shells from the air. There were several sea birds on it when we found it. What surprised me most was that it was old enough to not have any flotation, and being a 16' aluminum boat, it didn't get capsized or sunk in the surf. There was no sign of it being used in a long time, the deck was rotted, and the seat were soaked and torn. There was no motor, no oars.

Stopped to pick up what I thought was a 12-pack box of empty beer cans - turned out to be three full ones in the box with the empties!

Also, until I got fussy about what fenders I put on my most recent boat rebuild, I had never actually purchased any in my life! Every fender on all my boats was found through the generosity of those who don't pull them in while underway!

We have a big box at my marina for ALL the fenders that people find on the lake.
If you need one you just take the one or two that you need. :)

Hats? That could have been my hat. If I had all the hats back that have blown off my head while heading to the next fishing hole, I'd need a room to store them in.

Now that's a good marina, I would give that guy my business. Imagine a Marina owner putting off a sale and giving something away.

Lols, I got you beat...went out on a cool summer morning...came in on a hot summer afternoon. Minus the work jacket I was wearing in the morning and the keys to the truck that were in the pocket of said jacket.

Man, sucks calling your boss to deliver the spare work truck keys that were lost during your day of fishing. Very very lucky it wasn't a work day.

Can't say as I've ever found anything useful on the water though. Just some small logs and stuff.

We found a boat half floating on Lake Lanier. It was a very old small 17' outboard with no outboard just a floating hull. We left it and I saw a few days later on a trailer going down the highway. We tried to pull a black dock float but was unable to. Found a few hats and lots of trash.

Im going with, not only is it legal, its the right thing to do. Keeping America Beautiful.
It also has nothing to do with salvage, your picking up trash, so to speak. Just the same as if you volunteered to pick up trash on the side of the road.

I have picked up a fender and a life jacket on the side of the road in the last few months on the way to a local ramp near me. You can never have too many of either.

the only thing to watch out for is picking up 'natural' objects could potentially be illegal in some waterways. (logs in particular)

Removing deadheads is not illegal. It is a service that we would all thank you for. If in doubt contact the local sheriff dept or CG. If too large to remove notify the CG and they will issue a securite notifying mariners of the location of the hazard.

Of course this all applies at different levels depending on the waterway you're on. The CG isn't going to do diddly if I find a deadhead on the lake I live on. When I'm on Lake Huron they most certainly want to know the location of a deadhead.

I think you would only have a problem if you decide you don't want to keep what you picked up and someone sees you throwing it back in the water!
