If it was a boat he took good care of I would guess he would use matching trailer wheels. PASS

It's only photographs, but that boat looks very well maintained. The trailer looks to be in good shape, too. The fact that there's one wheel which doesn't match does not mean that he doesn't take care of his boat, or maintain it well. Matching wheels are nice, but are certainly no indicator of maintainance. The spare is still on the trailer. He didn't just throw on the spare and forget about it. Maybe he couldn't find a match, or maybe he couldn't afford a matching wheel. I wouldn't use that as a basis for judgement. Go and look at the boat. Check the deck, stringers, and transom. Chaparral's are built really well. The glass wrap on my stringers is extremely thick and glossy. I would definitely run my hands over every inch of that hull, feeling for soft spots and any abnormalities. The fact that it's been repainted is a red flag; but not necessarrily a deal breaker. I do think he's got it priced too high, but it looks really good, and in the spring, he might just get his asking price.

Well it didn't happen last spring.. He isn't hurting too much look at those houses... I think he might of poured way too much money in a old barge that had some serious problems and now is trying to break even which seems like it never happens.. I don't think in 83 boats was using those type of chairs... They are very nice and also very expensive..

Admittedly, I am indeed a little biased; but I'm also a realist. Post 70's Chaparrals are pretty much timeless. The seats and apulstery look original. Extremely well maintained, but original. If the current owner had that boat redone to that extent, he'd have a lot more than 5G invested. Talk to the owner, find out all you can about the boat. You never know, he may just be honest; don't count on that, though;).

He claims to have turned down 4500. If that's the truth, was it an online offer?, maybe over the phone... Go look at the boat, talk to the guy. If everything checks out to your satisfaction, show him 3500 in cash, and bring the most your willing to pay, just in case.

I don't really need a boat older than what I have.. Only reason I noticed it was it has the 350 and it's not in bad shape.. I have the 4.3 and of-course there is no replacement for displacement.. I can't justify the price(Only gave a grand for mine).. With 3995 I can repair and fix up what I have to be awesome.. If it was possible to get it at 3500.. That to me would be pretty fair and after a good look over I would take her home..... I look at it as I was in the 4th grade in 83.. That boat is old and they don't really go up in value with age.
I hope the fella sales it, but it will have to be luck.. I can't ever sale on CL for what I want for something

Maybe after all this time, the seller is learning that, too. As I said, I'm a little biased, but it is a really nice boat. If 3500 is the most you'd be willing to pay, and it's worth your time, then go check it out with 3500 in your pocket. If you'd rather re-do your own boat, it's still good to weigh out all of your options.

I've never spent any time, with any boat, for any reason... and later felt that it was a waste of time. I'm sure that it will never happen.:D

Not really worth my time.. About fifty miles away and there is no way I would do over 3500 and he won't touch 4500.. He is trying to sell his 1999 exploder with it now for 10999.00 for the whole deal... Weird guy.. Think what he has is gold.. Oh well.. I don't really need more power and how much faster could it be than what I have now? I will find one.. Those Chaparral's at the boat show gave me the itch

Some people think their stuff is worth way more than it is and you just need to walk away. Find a motivated seller. That is what I did when I found my boat.

Chaparral is mid quality boat which is similar to your Four Winns and my Wellcraft so nothing special.

I always ask the question of why they are selling. That sometimes gives you a clue for their motivation of selling and how eager they are to sell it.

Well, I don't think the boat price is far off, if it's that nice. You know what they say about care being more important than age. And it's a 21 footer, which is like 2 17 foot boats, when you get right down to it.

The Explorer on the other hand, is probably worth about $4k. That's a solid $8k package, and you've got a boat and a tow vehicle!

KBB said retail value is $5,600. Which is it? Can't have it both ways.
Retail value is the price at a dealer which never happens. I used Private Party value.

My brother is a manager of large CA auto auction. Ford Explorers are notorious for going back of book. Will only get worse when gas hits $5/gallon especially for the 5.0L engine.

That's exactly why I put zero faith in their pricing structures. The fact that you have to input a zip code to get a retail price but not a consumer price should tell you something.

I agree with you about the Explorer. Doesn't matter about the gas prices. Couldn't give me one. :)

That boat, in that condition would sell for 10K+ here (Australia)....My boat's 1972, and I could sell it for over 35K tomorrow.

I think my father sold my grandma's old exploder for 3k and it hardly had any miles.. I don't remember the year, but I used it one time, cause all I had was my pick up and I needed to haul some folks.. It rode like a buckboard:eek:.. It byfar took the cake for the crappiest ridding car I ever drove.. I had a 59 ford pick up with a smoother ride.. I would give the guy the 4995 for both.. I don't care what crap and gadgets he has installed on that car.. Junk is junk..

That guy scored that wellcraft for 1800 bones...:D
