Re: Is it OK to rename your boat?

I live in a small port on Lake Michigan , And I have to say that in my 50 plus years to my best recolection I can not remember any charter boats or cruising boats change names . You can see boats in the harbor that are from a nother state and the owners are from here and they stay the same . They only add something . Sail Boats owners seem to be more SUPERSTITIOUS . GOOD LUCK !!!!!!

Be very careful and follow the rules when renaming the boat. You can find the ceremony procedures online.

True Story

My buddy had a used 08 Sea Ray 240 Sundancer. He scraped the name off and was calling it something else. Everything was fine until he went to sell last Spring. While the potential buyer was on the way to his house, he hooked up the batteries. However he did it backwards or crossed connections. He's installed them a hundred times, but for some reason that day he did it wrong. The battery switch and cabin galley (one unit) caught on fire. He had the extinguisher in the galley cabinet, but I believed he had another spare somewhere else. He got the fire out, but the damage was already done.
He still sold the boat to that buyer. Insurance fixed the damage. Coincidence? Maybe.

We had the name changing conversation after he told me what happened. He didn't believe in the superstition either, until now. He is in the process of properly naming his new 280.

Hope this helps.

P5233002b.jpgSometimes its not the "renaming", but the "unnaming" that's a problem.

I painted a beautiful script name on my buddy's transom some years ago. It was named after his wife of 30 years. A few years later he divorced her. A few years later he remarried. Then he asked me to repaint it with the new wife's name. When I refused he simply acetoned the old name off.

Turns out now that the new old lady isn't too fond of boating so now his boat rides are limited to an hour or so.

My classic boat is named after Grandma and Great-Grandma. Can't go wrong there.....

I like naming my boats after boats that have sunk....The Orca, The Edmund Fitzgerald, etc...

If you're superstitious then don't do it. If you laugh in the face of superstition then go for it.

I've purchased two boats with no names on the transom! Makes life easy.
