Does anybody have any input on whether it is better to rebuild my existing 1998 Evinrude 175 Ficht motor or replace it with something new? I am thinking of selling my boat after I get the motor fixed or replaced. I have a 1998 Stratos 219CF that deserves a better motor!!! What i'm looking for is to recoup some of the loss that im taking on it. I have heard that matching a 98 boat with a newer motor would cost more in the long run than rebuilding the old one and selling it. Any input would be helpful.

Welcome stratoscaster - You can find a ton of advice here and most of it can be pretty helpful.

Before we launch though you might tell us what is going on with the motor you have.

Tough one, Stratocaster.

The '98 FICHT V6 engines have a very bad rep, so even a newly rebuilt one is gonna hurt you when you sell. So, no, it is not worth it.

If you put a new engine on it you will also take a major bath.

I suggest you find a good carbed late 90s OMC and replace it with that. You would lose some bux, but that looks to me like a better choice.

Have you considered selling the boat as is, with the broke engine or no engine? That might be the best choice.

Good luck. :)

Tough is right! I am in the same boat. Same motor. Same year. I have even been told that running or not, that motor will not get more than $500. Basically its scrap. I have asked the same questions you have asked with no reassuring input. Mine crapped out last thanksgiving and I still havent decided what to do with it. Im like you, hard to believe such a beautiful looking and once running engine could be so bad. Im inclined to go JB's route. Good Luck!

I'm with JB- I'd repower with something about the same year and enjoy the boat. You can find a decent priced carb'd v-6 from 96-00 that won't break the bank.

Re: is it worth it?

First of all, I want to thank you all for help on this matter. Just an update---all that talk about selling my baby was just angry talk that I suppose most everyone would feel when something like this happens but when it really came down to it I couldnt bring myself to sell her. I purchased a brand new 2003 150 Ficht Ram Evinrude. It didnt "break the bank" (relatively speaking!) and I got a full 3 year warranty, after all when the motor ran it was a great motor and from all that I hear in these forums this ficht problem is pretty much a non-issue these days. I learned far more in a couple of hours of reading different topics about my motor from these forums than I learned in 5 years from my dealer which makes me wonder if I could have avoided this problem all together if I knew then what I know now. So, in short-- LOL--I am back on the water, my boat is smiling again, the muskies are once again leery of that funky looking multi-colored thing swimming by them that makes that wierd "bloop-bloop-bloop" noise and I am back to eating bologna sandwiches for lunch and macaroni and cheese with hotdogs for dinner!!! Note to Patrickh--I hope that you figure out what it is that you want to do with your "highly expensive paperweight". I myself look at it as a lesson well learned. I can use some of the parts off my "highly expensive paperweight" down the road should something go after the warranty is up and try to parts out the rest where I can to recoup some of the loss but I will hold faith in Bombardier that my new toy will not turn into a "highly expensive bookend" to the other. All the best on your decision.
