my project boat used to have pin-striping, but it was old and i took it off with the intensions of replacing it; however, i have really grown to like the look of it without any striping. Is it necessary to have pin-striping on a boat? now obviously the boat will still run and all. But the only thing that i think i would need it for is to check the water level of the boat. wat is eveyones opinion on this topic...

The boot stripe in the photo you linked to wasn't applied properly to start with, so I wouldn't worry about it. If you take that one off and decide to apply a real one, you will want to mark the static waterline every foot or so and apply the new boot stripe approximately 1 to 2in above that. Takes a great deal of patience and care to get it to look right if the original is gone or was never applied to start with.

Its not needed. All it is there for is to break up all that white with a little dress up. It looks great without also.

On some boats, such as racing sailboats, it is a very critical indicator of trim and directly related to the water line. A boot stripe is used on larger boats, even boats like the one pictured, to verify proper loading and weight placement.

Often on FRP boats there will be small indentations or notches in the laminate at the water line to indicate where the boot stripe should be placed if the factory does not do so before shipping.

I've always liked the way a boot top looks. Like Shife said, it takes a bit of time and patience to get it right, but it is a classy (albiet unnecessary) addition.
