Re: Is Synthetic Outboard Oil Worth The Extra Cost?

the only reason i run the blended is because its only a buck or two more than the super tech and i run a REALLY rich mixture in my '56's but before that came out my father and i ran super tech ALL the time its a good oil and i hear its made to the exact same specs as quicksilver in the same plant ... cant go wrong with that IMHO
you probably wont notice a difference since your running 50:1 mix and as far as running some kinda snake oil as a condition of running 89 octane im calling phooie on that its utter BS ... each MECH has their opinion about ethanol and youll get 100 different stories from 100 different people
-now if you choose to avoid ethanol all together theres nothing wrong with that and if you only use your boat a few times a year id advise it or some sorta of ethanol treatment but as far as running it all the time thats bs unless youve just got money to burn.... JMHO

I can not speak for the higher HP motors, but for the smaller 9.9/10hp series, I have done tests over 4 years using semi-synthetic oils (Penzoil blend) in my trolling motors trying to stop the bleeding out oily goo & fouled plugs. I run 75-1 & have way less plug fouling & no leaking goo. I ran one motor for a total of 43 hours trolling with only one sputter & reved it up, blowing out the carbon on the plug, ran it for another 4 hours before going home & changing the plugs. So for what I want the blend works at a resonable price. The full synthetic, may be better, but I am happy with the blend for how it works for me.

Currently my 1988 Evinrude 120hp V4 is having some maintance work done.

Everyone has made very good points for their reasons. I'm going to discuss these points with my outboard mechanic and get his thoughts as well since he is an outboard guy himself.

I will get back with you all here in a few day's once I have my boat back and his thoughts on outboard engines.

I'll try to find out a HP range that is better suited for dino and syn on 2 & 4 stroke engines.

I'll be back!

Thanks for your help everyone :)
